Owner description: Austria's highest mountain and centrepiece of the High Tauern National Park You can approach the Grossglockner in many different ways: it is the highest mountain of the Alpine Republic, one of the most striking elevations in the Eastern Alps and the summit of passion for many a mountaineer. The mountain is also home to people, numerous animals and rare plants. The Glockner is cloaked in secrecy, is the stuff of legend and has great attractive power. It is an obstacle on the path from north to south, yet a place where it has been overcome through the millennia. Join us and get to know his majesty, the Grossglockner, in his numerous aspects!

Allow a full day to explore this lovely mountain, there are great panoramic views all along the road, available parking slots where one can stop to take photos or just to have a walk or a snack. Weather can change quickly here so take layers to be on the safe side. We were also lucky to meet the cute Marmots which the children adored! After which we kept driving down to Heilingenblut village, a really lovely place surrounded by mountains. A must do if you are in that area.

Have been to Grossglockner several times, sad to see the ice flow disappearing but stunning scenery all the way no matter which way you approach from.

I've visited the main viewing area 3 or 4 times over the last 30 years. The number of marmots never seems to decrease unlike the glacier which has now all but vanished (like my ambition to climb the thing). On my first visit the glacier finished below the parking area and we went down to walk on it (well I was younger then!). Still it's a wonderful spot and an exciting (and beautiful) road to it.

Climbing highest peak of Austria (3798m) is amasing experience. You are rewarded by breathtaking view to Pasterze glacier with many wateralls beneath Grossglockner, great scenery of Hohe Tauern national park, and surrounding mountains.
Depending on time of the year, it can be very demanding climb, and even in the middle of summer, don't be surprised if you enjoy snow blisters :-)
If you are not very familiar with glacier climbing, winter equipment and roping, you can hire experienced local mountain guide.
Food and accomodation is offered in nearby mountain huts (Lucknerhütte 2241m, Stüdlhütte 2801m, Erzherzog-Johann-Hütte 3450m) where you can buy food, tea, beer ... Plase note that in highest mountain hut in Austria Erzherzog-Johann-Hütte you need to pay for tap water !
Nice area to visit and enoy

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is a fantastic experience with breathtaking mountain views. We were lucky that is was a nice sunny day and not too many clouds, so that the mountains and the Grossglockner were in full view. So do check the weather forecast. The cost for a car is Euro 36, which seems a lot, but is well worth it if you make into a full day trip. You also get a good map of the road. There are many sharp U-bends, but just take your time and ignore the traffic behind you. Just be aware if you have passengers that tend to get travel sick, as this may not be the best road for them. Along the road there are many places where you can stop and recommend to stop as many times as you want to take into the ever changing mountain scenery. The road ends at the point where you can see the Grossglockner and from there you return to your entry point. Along the route there are several places providing dining and toilet facilities. We were visiting in June, but it was already busy enough, so recommend an early start. After 8 hours we were travel weary and in retrospect should have stayed to see the sunset, but maybe next time. We had a unforgettable day out with lasting memories.
