In 1679 Vienna suffered the plague and King Leopold ! bravely promised a mercy column if the plague should ever end which it di and by 1893 after many changes and designers the column was completed depicting angels praying and old Leopold somewhere in the column. like most columns and statues in Vienna it is beautiful and elaborate and worth seeing.

A beautiful scupture / monument which looks magnificent on a sunny day. The intricate work is mind blowing. In the centre of shopping area and so easy to see and photograph

Monument related to the plague that was in Vienna. It looks somewhat weird, with all the gold elements on top... strangely shaped... but, you will be passing by it most likely, so, stop for a moment and think about how good are the times we live in....

Visited on Tuesday 10th October. We were on a guided tour of the city centre and stopped at this monument. It was interesting to hear the history behind it.

“So all a man could win in the conflict between plague and life was knowledge and memories.”
- Albert Camus, The Plague (1947)

I come from Taiwan. In 2003, we had a fierce fight against SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome). ...... Then, we know the value of knowledge, courage and life.
