Amazing place: a high end Auction House with the art to prove it!
Today there was the exposition of the coming auction: Old Masters.
What a pleasure: on sale in a few days there are Guardi, Spagnoletto, Rubens (I left my hearth there but 40,000 to 60,000 euro is a bit steep for me...unfortunately), Brueghel etc.
Then some amazing jewellery that is going to be in auction few days later: Bulgari pieces from the 50s.
But the fun bit is on the ground floor and second floor where pieces left unsold are for grab at the lower estimate....I got 2 pair of cufflinks circa 1900 in 18kt gold for 400 euro: a bargain (at least for me that collect cufflinks)....such fun!

So many reviews on this site make out that the Dorotheum is a sort of facinating pawn shop full of items to browse through and buy. It is NOT! it is a very upmarket auction house, similar to Christies or Bonhams. There are no bargains here, unless you are spending over E3000. It is mostly very expensive furniture, paintings, china and silverware. Cheapest thing I could find was a silver fork for E270.

The only good thing about it is that you can stroll in unchallenged on a rainy day, go up the stairs or take the lift to the cafe and use their wc behind the right side of the bar. In addition, the cafe has no tourists and always has tables, so you can sit and relax those tired feet, use the loo and get a cup of coffee and cake. Otherwise, forget it.

The Dorotheum is a favored spot in Vienna. If you are not interested in participating in an auction, there are items that are for direct purchase. The beautiful place is like a museum and well worth a visit. There is a small café to rest before you continue your journey through the amazing floors of jewelry, furniture, rugs, art and much more.

The DOROTHEUM Palace is exciting in many ways. You can go there for auctions, you can buy jewellery or you go up to the second floor and enjoy coffee and a cake in the Dorotheum Café. Just a 5 minutes walk from St. Stephen's Cathedral.
