Radisson Blu Scandinavia Hotel
Ranked #42 of 102 Hotels in Oslo
Reviewed 1 May 2012

Some rooms in their hotel are recently renovated; lucky if you get one of those. The majority, however, are long overdue for a re-make. Dirty and smelly bathrooms, leaking toilets, too hot, or too cold rooms, tacky furniture, no working WiFi... An enormously big, noisy and impersonal breakfast room - and who came up with the idea that you have to get a fried egg for every two pieces of bacon you want to have with your scrambles??? Oslo hotels in general aren't that good compared to what you get in other Scandinavian cities, but this is worse than usual.

Room Tip: Some rooms are newly renovated: Get one!

Hi, the Raidisson Blu Scandinavia is a great hotel. It is in the heart of Oslo with all sites within walking distance. The hotel has been remoddeld and the lobby, restaurant etc. are all sparkling new. All personal is very attentive, speak perfect english and will help with everything, late checkout, umbrella, no problem at all. If you arrive at OSL gardemoen airport you can take the flybus express bus that ends in front of the hotel and takes about an hour. It leaves every 20 minutes.

Downside for us was the rooms. We had been upgraded to a higher floor room with a view of the oslo fjord (18th floor). The room was very outdated, in no way related to the pictures on the hotel website. Furnishings were old and broken. Bathroom was 1960's. The beds (altough we asked for a king we had doubles) were ok and i slept fine. It seemed they were remoddeling rooms since there was a sign at checkin that you could upgrade to a superiore redisigned room.

So if you visit the hotel and would like to have a nice room make sure you get something remoddeled. If these rooms are like the remoddeled lobby you will be fine. The old rooms are ok to sleep but nothing special!

Breakfast is ok, lots of choices and nice decor.

This hotel is not a brand new hotel. The rooms are comfortable for a business trip. The bar downstairs in the foyer is fine. Oslo is very expensive for an English person. The Skybar affords good views. The pool is good although not huge. Sauna is great. Mini gym is very mini - one crosstrainer, one running machine some weights. Breakfast very plentiful. For a holiday I think I would like something a bit more upmarket. Its comfortable, quite adequate. The bus from the airport stops right outside which is really convenient.

I have been staying in this hotel for the past 4-5 months for 2 nights/week so am very well aware of what these guys do well and not so well.

Location
The hotel is nicely located just a short walk from the Royal Palace and about a 10/15 minute walk to Oslo central station through the city (National Theatre station is the closest main station). There are plenty of local shops and restaurants nearby and plenty of bars (if you enjoy beer at £8 pint :-o)

Rooms
The hotel has been going through a large renovation and I must say that the renovated rooms are excellent, they are spacious, comfortable, modern and clean and the bathrooms have a mixture of walk in showers (with the big shower heads) and baths... all the bathrooms are kitted out with Hans Grohe stuff which is pretty good. The older rooms are still comfortable but the rooms are dated, carpet is well past its best and generally not my cup of tea!

Internet
Up until recently the wifi was absolutely awful in the rooms and you struggled to get any signal whatsoever in the rooms unless you had a particularly strong aerial and a good helping of luck.... Radisson have obviously taken this feedback onboard as they did an IT upgrade a few weeks back which has meant you get superb wifi reception in all the rooms myself and my colleagues have stayed in.

Food/Restaurants
I have eaten in the bar area as well as the restaurant and room service and can say the food overall is very good. The Enzo restaurant is excellent with regularly changing menu and a quality of food akin to the very best restaurants.

Gym
The gym area is pretty well equipped for a hotel gym, it has a separate weights room and cardio area comprising of 2 running machines a cross trainer and bike with a chest press, shoulder press, leg press, lat pull down and free weights up to around 25 Kg

Skybar
On the 21st floor there is an excellent Sky bar that is very stylish and trendy and has a great view over downtown Oslo - definitely worth checking out.

Staff
The staff here are superb and have always been very attentive and helpful, from the reception staff though to the room service guys and the bar/restaurant staff. For a regular traveller to Oslo this is really important and one of the main reasons for coming back.

Overall I'm very happy with the hotel and won't be going elsewhere.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the newly renovated floors and if possible get a corner room as they have more space.

The location of this hotel is nice. It takes some 5 minutes to walk to the main shopping area in downtown Oslo and about 5 minutes to the Royal Palace. The train station is at a 20-minute walk but the airport transfer bus stops right in front of this hotel. As with most quality hotels in Scandinavia, hotel's breakfast was superb on food choice. Our room was nice and clean, obviously recently renovated, with nice furniture, an LCD-TV and comfy beds. An in-room safe and an iron with an ironing board in each room - perfect. Ice machines on each floor and free wireless Internet access all over the place. There's also a pool in the basement, free for hotel's guests. The hotel rises well above the nearby buildings, so if you're into a good view, ask for a top-floor room.

Room Tip: You might want to ask for a room on the other side from city tram tracks if your sleep is light - Os...
