Villa Karel (was Michel) is spacious, very comfortable, and elegant but homely - it's equipped with lots of useful extras, and we settled in very quickly! It's located in Riambel - a small town, but is also within walking distance of Souillac and Surinam, where you can find shops and places to eat out. The area is also served with buses, a 5-10 minute walk to the nearest stop.
The Villa is made up of 2 apartments: 3 bedrooms on the ground floor, all airy and well equipped, and each with its own shower and loo (although for one room the toilet is not ensuite, but just off the adjoining corridor); and an upstairs one bed apartment, accessible via the outdoor staircase. Both apartments have a kitchen and lounge area, and windows facing out to the sea - fantastic views in all weathers and at any time of day! Downstairs, you can sit on the covered verandah and enjoy the fresh air even when it's raining. A BBQ is also available in the garden if you wish to dine al fresco!
The sea (actually a lagoon) is just the other side of the garden fence, and is great for snorkelling, although at low tide it can be a little trickier to swim, so paddling in the shallows is a good alternative! Care should be taken not to tread on the spiny sea urchins, which can be quite widespread. The beach is perfect for peaceful walks and beach-combing, and watching the sun set. You can walk a bit further to reach the next beaches towards St Félix, or the lovely clifftop walks at Gris-Gris in the other direction.
This is a really pleasant and peaceful place to stay, and a good base for travelling from (easier if you hire a car), but there are also interesting places to explore locally and restaurants serving traditional Créole cuisine. We enjoyed a delicious meal cooked by the concierge who lives just behind the villa, and whose pets occasionally came to keep us company :-) I'd highly recommend Villa Karel, as a 'home from home' in a gorgeous coastal location!
I booked this accommodation when it was called Villa Michel. The ownership changed hands during the booking and unfortunately all of the reviews disappeared which is shame as the reviews are why I booked it. Trip Advisor caused a great deal of stress for this booking due to this change of ownership but I cannot commend the previous and current owner more for their communication and reassurance that all would be well. Due to the stress caused by Trip Advisor I almost cancelled - but I am so glad I didn't. Beautiful accommodation, beautiful country, beautiful scenes to look at from the villa. Not too luxurious you would worry about breaking anything, but clean and well equipped.
We took advantage of the housekeeper on site to cook us a meal for a birthday for my partner and had a lovely baked fish with many vegetarian dishes that I could eat plus a birthday cake for RS2000. This was much nicer food than most of the food we had eating out in restaurants so I can definitely recommend taking advantage of this. The sea was too shallow for swimming but I enjoyed watching the local people wandering around up to their chests/waists catching whatever they were catching. Can recommend Case Nautique for snorkelling, very honest company who put us off while the weather was bad. Would definitely return. Wonderful holiday.
