Just like the majority of the customers in this hotel (we're in our 50's and were the youngest customers), this hotel is old and tired, but still pleasant.
If you expect a fancy, newly renovated 4-star hotel with sea views for less than AUD $100 per night, then you've got the wrong hotel.
The thing is, the majority of the customers are elderly people, retirees coming down to spend the summer along the coast. This type of clientele doesn't like changes much.
For instance, the first 2 staircases are equipped with a chairlift.
Of course, as mentioned in other reviews, there are a lot of maintenance issues, like the bathrooms that could do with a renovation, the lift that is somewhat temperamental, the doors that are difficult to open at times, etc.
I must say we didn't have any major issues with our room nor the breakfast, everything worked, the room was clean, the water was hot and the breakfast was nice.
We certainly like the fact that, despite not having a private car park, the hotel reception supplied us with a special hotel parking pass (for a small additional daily cost) which allows you to park on the streets near/ in front of the hotel. Very handy.
Not so handy was the flight of stairs at the front of the hotel, not easy when you have some heavy luggage to carry and the WiFi didn't work in our room (we were on the 3rd floor) but the WiFi does work well in the foyer of the hotel.
We booked this hotel from Australia with breakfast included in a good deal, so for the price, it was pretty good. Would I go back there? with a similar deal, why not? but best to check when the Eastbourne tennis tournament is on - it gets hard to find a parking spot.

Room tip: to get best views, request a front-facing room.

These type of establishments should really, at this stage, be closed down. This place is surely of the type that inspired John Cleese to write his all time comedic masterpiece - “Fawlty Towers” and it was only by hanging onto the memory of that series that I managed to keep myself sane.

The room I stayed in was devoid of thought - just a box with things put in or rather shoehorned in. Every changing hotel fad or health and safety consideration has just merely been layered upon the last version of this tired and jaded room.

My shower was held together with a piece of wire so as to keep it from falling apart. It had two temperature settings - cold and boiling point.

The bar of the hotel was occasionally manned by, what appeared to me to be a Spanish bartender. At least he sounded Spanish to me. I say occasionally as he disappeared for long periods leaving customers wondering if the bar was open, closed or just unattended due to lack of interest. He was also the most pedantic and irritating barman I have ever met. Signing for a drink at the bar was an act of gargantuan proportions. The bar and indeed most of the facilities are catered to a more mature generation and as such; the bar predominantly gravitated towards cash transactions, closes at a very conservative time with no late drinks served or room service.

All in all a forgettable, comical, lamentable, amateurish and ultimately one offish experience.

Sadly myself and my husband were not able to secure a room at our usual seafront Eastbourne hotel last weekend. We usually stay at least six times a year there.I think being unable to secure a rom was largely due to the Nature Valley tennis tournament in Eastbourne,
The Albany Lions was not much cheaper than our usual hotel but was extremely dated. Our room was dirty and the net curtains filthy. Thank goodness we hasn’t booked to eat in the hotel in the evening as the breakfast was inedible,
Avoid this hotel unless you are desperate for somewhere to stay in Eastbourne.
Whilst staff are lovely the management should be ashamed !

Room tip: Try to book another seafront hotel

We stayed here for 1 night, great location, we had a side room, which gave us a great view of the bandstand where there was live music playing on Saturday night, which was a bonus! Room was clean but in much need of a refurb! Bed was very comfortable with crisp clean white sheets. Shower was powerful and hot, but bathroom needed some TLC. Breakfast was fab for the price we paid for the room. Hotel is right on the seafront and easy walking distance of the pier and town centre. Would stay again if we needed a cheap room.

Nice shower and coffee and tea facilities. A bit old fashioned and outdated. £10 for a sea view but that seems to be the standard. No breakfast included. Thought a bit over priced as stayed in Brighton the following night with a sea view and breakfast included for the same price.
