Owner description: The Higgins Bedford is Bedford's art gallery and museum. It's a place to explore collections of fine & decorative arts, world-class watercolours, local stories and find out about great Bedfordians. Changing exhibitions mean there is always something new to see. There is lots to do for all the family.

Having tried to do the museum in one go, I resigned myself to the fact that it would take several, shorter visits to do it justice. Which is fine because they also have wonderful exhibitions. I have recently seen the exhibition of Anne Frank and family: the photos of Otto Frank, which was on tour round the World, and an art exhibition of Trees in British Art. Both were excellent. This spring/summer I plan to see Celebrating Women of Bedfordshire and Bawden's Beasts, about some of the artwork of Edward Bawden.
Entry is free but I like to leave something in the donation box.
They are also attached to The Higgins Pantry cafe and restaurant.

Enjoyed this as much the second time. Some wonderful things in the Trees exhibition including a Constable drawing and a few Edward Lear's, as well as the very moving exhibition of photos of Anne Frank growing up.

There is something for everyone in this excellent museum/art gallery. Everything from mammoth tusks to a stuffed duck-billed platypus. Not to mention the art, the history of Bedfordshire and its inhabitants. Just overwhelming. And not dull: there are plenty of hands-on exhibits for children and the layout is superb. Worth several visits.

This beautifully arranged museum is full to bursting with local treasures and information about how Bedford has developed over the years, its fascinating and because it is free you can visit as many times as you like focusing on different aspects each time. A real hidden treasure tucked behind the busy High Street.

A lovely free museum which has been recently renovated, family friendly with a range of activities for children to complete along the visit. Suitable for locals or people visiting the town. Just off the high street with a lovely green space and café just next door. They also hold temporary exhibitions (we saw one on Ann Frank's photographies and the meaning of trees in paintings. I recall them having an exhibition on Dali a little while ago) so worth popping in. Minor downside : a few interactive features were not working.
A thorough visit of the museum including the exhibitions would take around 2hours
