Decided to go here after receiving a voucher on email offering a free glass of prosecco with a main meal. Nice venue, arrived about 15 mins early and was seated promptly. That's when the good bit ended! We waited 20mins to be offered a drink and only after collaring a waiter at another table did we manage to order our food and drinks. We ordered 2 glasses of prosecco for me and my partner but after these were finished we had to call over a waiter again to order a further drink as he was more interested in a table of 7 women sat nearby, our service was completely non existent. Food was good but we were completely neglected and only managed to get any attention by having to flag down a waiter serving another table. When i received the bill only one glass of prosecco was credited....apparently the voucher can only be used by one person and each person needs their own unique voucher. Never known a credible restaurant offer something which was so badly mis-sold than this. So a party of 4 would all need their own email (not the same one recycled) to get a free glass of prosecco. I complained to the manager who basically washed his hands of the issue and when i told him the service was appalling he simply shrugged his shoulders. My advice, is stay away, bad attitude, bad service and misleading offers. Absolutely terrible....avoid!

Our room was very large, excellently appointed with a very comfortable bed and a clean bathroom (the shower cubicle leaked slightly). This is an old building and access to the rooms is understandably a little pokey. Checking-in was incredibly and unnecessarily complicated. The two-night reservation had not computed and an awkward re-calculation of payment for each night separately and in advance had to be organised which took a very long time and was embarrassing for our host who had booked in advance and who was settling the bill. The staff are friendly but a little clueless - our request for a sherry was met with blank uncomprehending looks. "Never heard of it" was the response. Breakfast was canteen-like. The tables totally bare and uninviting. But it was adequate with croissants that were lovely and good hot tea. Napkins had to be searched for and there was considerable discussion over the cold milk supplied for tea. This is a nice place to stay - really - but the catering side could do with a shake-up.

We called in mid afternoon for a late lunch, and were very impressed with the refurbishment. The food very good and the atmosphere was friendly. We will be back.

Recently refurbished this pub is now better described as a restaurant. It's chefs have gone up a notch with food being much more consistently good but although the decor is very plush and new and clean, it is also very garish - including gold and silver sprayed deer (I think) skulls on a couple of the walls - weird and rather off putting in an eating establishment! Here's hoping that the chefs stay and the skulls are removed soon!
