We have just returned from a two week holiday at Penhale and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The scenery is stunning, seeing right across St Austell Bay. There were some gorgeous flower beds which were a blaze of colour. The shower block can be very busy first thing in the morning (I just went a little later) but I saw it being cleaned regularly. The owners and staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them.

The campsite was quiet at night, some noise from the road but not a problem. After 11 the campsite rules state this is quiet time, the harmonica/guitar players who decided to ignore this were reminded by the campsite owner!!!!. We found Penhale a peaceful and relaxing place to be. Although full was no overcrowding, plenty of space for the kids to run around and play.

I recommend Penhale to anyone who likes a quiet site, we will be returning.

My partner and I stayed here for a week at the end of July/ start of August - we chose it for it's locations and their stance on this being a quiet, relaxing site. Penhale is certainly in a wonderful location - 5 minute walk from the lovely Polkerris beach with a nice pub and restaurant, and another 1 mile walk to the beautifully unspoilt Par beach. Most of the site has a wonderful view across St Austell bay, is very nicely located for Fowey and for travelling to other areas in Cornwall.

I do feel that they may be resting on their laurels a little however, as they can bank of the great spot and location. For the price per night, I think a little more effort could be put in to the toilet blocks. As many have mentioned there are only 2 showers in the mens and three (one of which is very small so no good for those with kids etc) in the ladies; they are in relatively good order but could do with an occasional more thorough clean.

The non-hook up part of the site is mostly on quite a significant slope, more so that I'd got the impression of. The aspect that we were dissapointed with however was that it wasn't particularly quiet - it seems from other recent reviews we may have just been unlucky but when a site advertises so strongly that they are a quiet site I was dissapointed that other campers were allowed to have music blaring from car stereos for hours, for example. I realise the owners can't be everywhere of course.

A definite positive however, to end on, is the fresh produce on offer with an honesty box and the plethora of leaflets/ guides etc made available. Overall we enjoyed our stay but it wasn't quite the quiet, chilled week of camping we were hoping for.

The campsite is located in an excellent position for exploring Cornwall. The view from the field is an amazing sight to wake up to (when it ain't raining!) Facilities are adequate. Small shop with the essential provisions. The local bacon and eggs are delicious. Toilet block is dated but regularly cleaned. Two shower cubicles in the gents and three in the ladies. Not enough in my opinion but if you time it right you can avoid the queues. Campsite was full but there was still plenty of room to spread out. One point to mention is the whole field is on a slope apart from the electric hookup pitches. Would visit again but only if we had a level pitch....

Arrived to find a field on a gradient short of Ben Nevis ! No level ground unless you had a electric hook up pitch booked at additional cost the unlevel pitch made sleeping very uncomfortable. The shower block was in desperate need of modernisation and did not service the amount of campers staying on the site. The Mens had only 2 showers and a toilet out of order all week. The ladies had 3 showers one that was only shoulders width and the strip light not working. Campers were queuing to use the facilities which was degrading. The ladies had a hair drier which packed up but the machine still took your money ! The general cleanliness needed addressing as the facilities were always dirty and the toilets regularly had toilet paper missing. We spoke with other visitors on the site who agreed they were disappointed with the site and we had to speak with the owners to have what should be the bear essentials attended to. As for the surroundings it was very near the main road into Fowey and very noisy.

This campsite is the perfect place for a relaxing family camping holiday. We woke to a beautiful view over St Austell Bay each morning which just put a smile on our faces. Our pitch was next door to the toilet/shower block but was screened tastefully with wooden fence and was not noisy or smelly. In fact we were very happy being so close especially at night! Our children (aged 11 and 7) slept in their own tent for the first time. The campsite was safe quiet and lovely. Germans, Danish and Dutch families mingled well with the British and the site was well maintained.
The shower block is tired but clean and usable. There were queues for showers at peak times as only 3 showers in ladies and 2 in gents. But this didn't give us a big problem as we just showered at different times.
The kids found that the pool table was in a terrible state and needed replacing but the table tennis table kept them busy.
The campsite was amazingly quiet and peaceful especially between the hours of 11pm and 7am as requested by the owners.
Lovely walk over field and down track to the beach, pub and restaurant. Our kids managed it at an easy pace and took us between 20-25 minutes. No complaining either as the end location was worth it either going down to the beach or back to the campsite.
We would love to return as the campsite is perfect for a very chilled family holiday. The beach is beautiful and has everything you could possibly want.

Room Tip: Get an electric hook up pitch for best views.

This is a wonderful place to stay if you want peace and quiet with facilities and views! We came off the Fowey Ferry Boat wanting a campsite for just a few nights to enjoy Cornwall and Penhale was the first one we came to - and we couldn't have been more pleased, Exactly what we wanted.

Stayed here for Easter week-end in our works van, on a non-electric hook up site. We wanted quiet and rest, that's what we got. On arrival we were given maps of the local area and walks (to the pub). Yes, the top sites are near to a road, but we tuned into the birdsong (including pheasants) all day and watched the Kestral hunting in the next field. Absolutely beautiful views from the top of the site. Always hot water, every where was always clean (yes, once there was grass on the floor in the toilet area, this is a campsite made in a field of grass!), there were vases of wild flowers in the ladies toilets on Easter monday. Always Communal washing line, soap dispensers (always full) in toilets, shelves in showers, (i hate it when you have to put your soap on the floor), and moveable seats to sit in shower, or use to put your clothes on. Excellant professional hot blasting hair dyrer (20p,) and baby changeing facilities in ladies and Mens toilets. Good washing up facilities. We didn't go into the laundry area, or games room. Really lovely Non Commercialsed camp site.
