We actually stayed in the fisheramans cottage in Polruan on the east bank of the river Fowey. We, my partner and myself did have some concerns that her two tenaged daughters might not have enough to do and no oppertunity to indulge in retail therapy.
This however was not a problem Polruan was spectacularly scienic and safe enough to let the girls (17&19) look after themselves. Polruan has a small harbour with a regular ferry service to Fowey on the west bank of the river Fowey.
The harbor becomes a small sandy beach at low tide with the local youth useing the harbour wall as a diving board into the habour. (as a watersports instructor I should condem this, but it did look perfectly safe to me!).
The road down to Polruan was however anything but safe. Steep norrow and on changeover day Saturday cloged with impatent and inconciderate moterists. One Idiot came down the hill blocking my path through a particularly narrow part of the road; leaving me stopped on a gradient 1;5 that even an Audi hand brake would not hold on! In my copy of the higyway code it says that verchles traveling up hill have the right of way. Suspect if he was asked what the higway code was his reply would be hu?
The second big problem is the total lack of parking; main car park is about 20 spaces on the harbour side accessed by a horifying decent directly facing the harbour!
Please don't take my comments about the horendouse roads as a Lincolnshire man out of his comfort zone. I am from Linconsire, but one of my fav activitys is driving and cycleing in moutans and I have driven every major mountan pass in the uk. and in the alps I go over the top not through the tunnels.
