Description: We will be closed on Thursday 9th, Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th March. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. Mariners (Formally Lathwells) is a Grade Two listed historic building in one of Bideford's oldest streets. The building dates back to the 1700's. History tells us it has been a Mariners house, an Inn, a sowing school, a private house and now a restaurant. Mariners is small, intimate and relaxing. The table is yours for the evening. Our food is cooked from fresh to order. We pride ourselves on seasonal fish and meat from the Bay Area as far as possible. Our menu changes often with specials featuring on a daily basis. We look forward to meeting you. Booking is strongly advisable to secure a table. We are open Wednesday - Saturday from 6.30pm. Last food orders are taken at 8.30pm.

Really enjoyed our meal here. Lots of fish dishes to choose from. Friendly service. Generous portions and pleasant surroundings.

This little restaurant is a real gem It hadn't been our first choice, based on TripAdvisor reviews, but we were so pleased that we ended up here. We all had fish starters - all excellent, indeed my mother said her prawns were the best she'd ever had. I had fishcakes which were almost entirely fish. Delicious! Mains were good too, and for such a small place there was an interesting and varied menu with something for everyone. We didn't have room for dessert, but I am sure that would have been good too.

There is a saying, I wish you enough. Mariners is definitely enough! We've had enough bland or overseasoned meals elsewhere, enough bad service at other restaurants to compare. We were greeted by someone who was friendly and given a choice of tables (we had booked). The restaurant is small, cosy, with that feeling of intimacy that's hard to come by in today's tendency towards large or chain restaurants. Our drinks order was taken promptly, with a jug of water provided just beforehand without us having to ask. One of the party has to follow a strict gluten free diet and the waitress was helpful in providing information so that appropriate choices could be made from the menu. To start we had tiger prawns, cooked to perfection and served with roasted lemon and lemon mayonnaise. Our mains were swordfish with sunblush tomatoes & olives, and venison wellington, cooked to order. Both served with dauphinoise potatoes, roasted root vegetables and steamed green vegetables. Again, the food was delicious and beautifully cooked and presented. We had an apology for the wait for the mains but hadn't felt like we'd been waiting. A good selection of puddings were available, including a cheese platter we saw served to another table which was certainly more than enough for two to share! Meringue with autumn berries and a selection of sorbets finished our meals. Ales were local and the wine selection good. The bill was provided quickly upon asking. Chef (proprietor?) John came to check on us after our mains and service generally was attentive without feeling oppressive. The whole experience was one that managed to hit the right note on every level. We'll definitely come back. We were enjoying ourselves too much to get our phones out for photos of the food!

Been a couple of years since we were last here but glad to say John the owner is still keeping his standards very high serving excellent food in an interesting environment with the history of Bideford on the walls so you always have something to keep you entertained whilst waiting for your food

Had a pleasant meal with excellent reasonably priced wine on Saturday night. Good sized portions so next time may not have a starter! We all had the Fish Chowder which came with plenty of vegetables. Very good service and friendly and attentive chef/ proprietor?
