“Pleasantly Surprised .. For the Money Great Value”
Reviewed 1 January 2012

We stayed at the Galway House as we wanted a B and B away from the seafront on New Years Eve so that once we had finished partying we could go somewhere a little bit quiet .. it did not quite turn out this way!

We arrived at the Galway and were initially confused as there was a sign on the door saying please use other door, which after spending twenty minutes hunting for this door we finally found it .. we have mentioned this to them and they plan to make changes here! The door was opened by a very pleasant lady who was initially somewhat confused about the booking but after some confusion mainly on our part our booking was found, we were then told that she would show us to our room.

Initial thoughts on the B&B .. initially taken into the breakfast room which was very nice .. laid out well, spacious with a very pretty xmas tree and a TV which guests could view! We were showed up to our rooms .. it was obvious on arrival that it was going to be basic but well for the £60 for one night for 2 people with breakfast you couldn't really expect much more then basic accommodation.

We were shown into our room and shown where the shared bathrooms were and then my partner was shown where he could park his car safely round the back in separate parking. On doing this we were kindly asked if we had any dietary requirements and asked if we wanted a full english for breakfast .. which was of course a yes please!!

Whilst my partner was out of the room i had a look round and found the room to be clean, well maintained and spacious with plenty of storage space and a very comfortable bed! The bathrooms were basic with just 2 toilets .. 1 for the ladies and 1 for the boys which was fine and the shower cubicle was just a shower in a cupboard which made us smile but it was quirky and added character to the place! Loud music and noise was blaring from several of the rooms but as it was new years we kinda let this slide really!

We then headed for dinner .. it was just a short walk from the harbour .. about 5-10 minutes along the harbour which was a lovely walk and meant that it was easy to find your way back to when returning home from an evening out ..We spent time in our room catching up on some rest when we realised one of our phones was running low .. went to reception and asked if they had a charger i could borrow .. not a problem .. we then spent some time chilling whilst getting ready for the evening ahead. On heading out dressed as the Flinstones it caused great excitement and the couple who run it were very sweet and kindly took our photo .. this was a topic of conversation over breakfast!

On returning to the hotel from our night out there were no problems initially .. settled into bed and were settled into bed at around 0230 and were asleep within minutes due to the comfy bed and a few ciders but were awoken at 0500 by loud noise coming from the rooms upstairs .. hardly the owners fault but kinda ruined what could of been a great nights sleep!

On waking and heading for breakfast we were greeted with a smile, offered cereal, toast, tea, orange juice and asked if we were ready for our full english .. yes please .. i had been waiting since 5am when rudely woken so was starving! It arrived and was a good selection of bacon, egg, sausage, beans, mushroom, tomatoe, potatoe croquet, fried bread and as much tea, toast and orange juice as you could manage .. water was also avaliable .. the breakfast was delicious .. well for me although my partner reports his croquet was under cooked but other then that a really yummy filling start to the day!

On leaving we were asked in quiet if we had slept well and if other guests had been disrupting to which we were not going to lie and informed them that we had been woken up by noice in the early hours which was greated with sincere apologies, we gave a tip as i was pleased with the service we had recieved as it served its purpose .. a bed and breakfast .. the couple, cleanliness and breakfast make up for the noise level and i would plan to return any time other then new years when and if i plan to stay in weymouth and would recommend it to a friend! We also pointed out about the sign issue and were told that this would be rectified but we were suprised to hear no one else had had this issue!

Overall I would say ignore the bad reviews and stay here if you are after a simple bed and breakfast which does as it says on the tin with lovely staff, good breakfast and a clean room but avoid at party times such as new year unless in a large group and you can fill the b and b!!

Room Tip: Room 2 very comfy and had a massive bed

A very dated B&B, a good drive from the seafront. We stayed here for a Triathlon and had to be up at 4am, we couldn't keep our window open (despite it being June) as the noise from outside from so loud. We had people walking up and down the road shouting all night.

Our room was tiny!! a cheap metal framed double bed with what can only be described as a sheet for a duvet. I didn't feel the room was particularly clean either. We had a very small sink, a bedside table and a tiny tv. There was hardly anywhere to put your bags!

As we were up at 4am we missed breakfast but they provided us with cereal.

My main problem was with the lady who greeted upon arrival. She looked us up and down before realising we had made a booking. She then told me I had to park my car illegally and leave her the keys so she could move it.....obviously I didn't do this!

All in all - I’d avoid. There are plenty of better B&B's in the area and must better value for money.

A two-day weekend in Weymouth turned into an excellent family seaside-short-break in large part thanks to a lucky find in this guest house. From the street, it may seem unprepossessing, but inside one finds a warm welcome, an excellent breakfast, and a good base for a couple of days at one of England's best beaches.

I have two well-behaved children, so the room was perfect for me, although it's possible a couple of rambunctious rugrats might have found it a bit cramped. It's a bit of a tight squeeze in the shower, too. The route to the beach involves a walk through town which again might be more awkward for families who want only to walk across the road to get to the seaside. The real problem with the location is the lack of decent supper places right outside the door. There's an average Indian next door (bring your own beer), and a Chinese place I didn't try a little further down. Otherwise, it's that hike into town or get in your car - and parking in Weymouth is not easy. (A full guest house might result in parking problems, too. I think they had room for about 4 cars, but more rooms than that. You'd get helpful advice from the owners, though.)

The breakfast included in the price of your room is more than ample, however, so you could fill up on that, and then stuff yourself at a seafront lunch as well. Grab a few pork pies and sausage rolls at a supermarket and that's eating sorted out for the day. The beds were really comfortable, so getting a night's sleep should be no problem.

Thumbs-up from all the family for the Galway Guest House. We all loved it.
