“Break in Devon”
Reviewed 27 October 2011

I've just been to this hotel and although there were a few negatives, the overall experience was one of excellent food and service. The hotel room itself was very clean as was the hotel. It was run by competent staff who were very friendly. The hotel was very conveniently placed, right in the centre of town. However, the night-life on a Friday and Saturday were very disruptive, if you happened to have a room at the front or alley side of the hotel, which I did; and had the night revellers until 3am due to where my room was situated. The hotel room that I was in was far too hot and short of opening a window couldn't reduce the heat. The floor space in the room and bathroom were on a slant, which was an interesting experience in bed. I would recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Barnstaple, but make sure that you have a room away from the road.

Room Tip: rooms located away from the main road and alley I assume are much quieter.

If you arrive by train you can get a bus from Barnstaple Station to the hotel. When we were there it was Valentine's weekend. The restaurant did a special menu, the ladies got a flower. I am not sure what the men got, a balloon I think.

The hotel is very central and busy. it had a holiday feel to it. The staff were lovely and very helpful. The two small rooms we had were a bit too tiny for more than overnight. The view from both was poor. However for the price it was acceptable. Possibly if we paid more we would have had more comfortable rooms.

Room Tip: Not by the lift and ask about view.

This hotel is in the old fashioned/traditional style, is clean, well maintained and tidy. The staff are its greatest asset, being professional, friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The Bistro (62 The Bank) attached to this hotel, serves fabulous food and we would highly recommend it.
However, sadly, all this is over shadowed by the horrendous noise outside the hotel at night, preventing you from sleeping! The streets are very narrow and the hotel has a nightclub opposite and a pub by its side. Its so loud because the clubbers are just outside the hotel's windows. The shouting and swearing goes on from 11pm to 5am. The owners of this hotel need to put their hands in their pockets and get some decent sound proofing. What was particularly upsetting (on top of 2 nights without any sleep) was that we had paid extra for a "premier room". We would expect to be able to sleep in a "standard room", let alone a premier one!
When we complained to Dave the manager and asked for a small refund, he said we could try writing to the owners for their consideration …
If you can manage without sleep, stay here, if not, I'm sorry to say (because of all the great things about it), you need to give this hotel a wide berth.

Thank you for your positive comments about the staff and the general presentation of the Royal & Fortescue.
Thank you also for recommending 62The Bank, the Bistro attached to the Hotel.
As you are aware The Royal & Fortescue is in the town centre, this will always have its pluses and minuses when staying in such a hotel.
I would like to point out that there has been major investment in soundproofing in recent months and this will continue, until all rooms where it is practical to fit it, have been completed.

Uneven floors with creaks to match. AC unit looked like R2D2 and sounded like chewbacca when I switched it on.
Clean bed towels etc. Hot water for shower took 13 mins to come through.

We appreciate your comments. It is always Brend hotels aim to maintain the 'Old world charm and character' of a Hotel like the Royal & Fortescue. The company is continually investing in the replacement of equipment and the refurbishment of rooms; at the same time maintaining a friendly and welcoming ambiance.

I stayed here with some friends for a long weekend. I had Room 409 which I think has previously been mentioned, but am now now pleased to say has been installed with a portable air conditioning unit, which I have to say was a life safer. The hotel is very hot throughout and as previously mentioned this room does overlook a side entrance of a nightclub. The air condiitoning unit does pump out really cool air, but is a bit like having a washing machine on!

The room was clean, slightly dated but the bed was very comfortable. The shower could have had a bit more power to it.

The breakfast was average, the fried breakfast was aportion controlled and could have perhaps be offered with slightly bigger portions. In my opinion the ingredients were the best quality but were pefectly edible and acceptable. Cereals, juices, yoghurts, fresh fruit and yoghurts were on offer, but the fresh fruit wasnt replenished very quickly.

The staff were very friendly and helpful, and in my opinion the best bit about the hotel.

The location is right in the heart of Barnstaple.

My only complaint about the hotel was the the general areas were too hot!

I would stay here again just for the convenience and the staff.

Thanks for your positive comments and praise of the staff and your appreciation of the advantages of being in the town centre.
As with all old, historical buildings, temperature control can be very difficult, both in the summer and winter: hense the reason for the company investment in portable and or fixed air conditioning units and double glazing being introduced to a large number of rooms.
