“barcelo stirling highland hotel; an excellent stay”
Reviewed 9 February 2012

My wife and I are just back from a weekend at the Barcelo Stirling Highland hotel. The hotel is a clever rebuild of an old High School ( complete with and Observatory on its' roof which you can request to see and which gives superb views of Stirling and surroundings ). The staff all aimed to please, the rooms were excellent and the food was first class. High recommended.

I stayed here for one night and the room was really attractive and had the usual amenities you would expect: TV, kettle, tea, coffee, good shower, etc.

I don't remember how much I paid but it was definitely reasonable and I remember - although it was perhaps because of the time of year - it was very quiet and I even managed a nap in the evening before going out so no noise was nice. Sometimes in hotels people in the hall slam their doors etc but not here.

I didn't try any of the food, just slept here at night for a short getaway and I seem to remember parking was easy and free.

I only spoke to the receptionist to check in and out but she was efficient and friendly.

I would recommend this hotel because it is very close to the castle and pubs etc., it was quite regal-/grand-looking inside and I got a good nights sleep.

I was pleasantly surprised I had lunch on two days, dinner, bed and breakfast. The lunches were very nice with what can only be described as very upmarket airline food, in that it was delivered in a sectioned box, it was very tasty and you could pick the bits you like and swap the bits you didn't. The variety was very good. The room was pleasant enough a bit tired around the edges especially the bathroom but it was quiet and comfortable. Dinner was fine if not stunning. Amusingly their effort to be trendy and serve food on slate meant the staff had to do a circus act to stop the food (not always successfully) falling off. Breakfast was again fine and plenty of it, the staff were a bit surly though.

Stayed overnight after a birthday party (special rate). Arrived around 2:30pm and spent the afternoon using the facilities prior to the party in the English room. Very enjoyable moving between the spa / steam room / sauna / pool while observing the grey skies through the window.

The meal for the party was excellent served in the English room which is a large, pleasant high ceilinged room with a roaring fire. The service was top notch and we were made to feel like special guests.

The room was OK, maybe in need of freshening up.

The staff were very helpful especially the concierge, Doug, who took time out to take us up to the observatory and gave us a very enthusiastic resume of all the sights visible from the ramparts as well as an informed talk about the 123 year old telescope. He then suggested a walk round the city walls which we did.

The hotel has lots of character having been a Victorian school in a previous life. Would come back again

I stayed here with a group of girlfriends. What attracted us was the fact that there is a Spa.
Nice warm welcome, fantastic porter, who arranged for us to go the Observatory and see the beautiful views over Stirling. The rooms were clean, but mediocre, and a little too warm ( but you can open a window...couldn't find the thermostat). Wonderful supply of ice for our drinks in the evening, and accommodating staff.
So what let it down. 3 things:
1) Internet access - on top of the room rate this has to be paid for. For goodness sake - this is penny pinching in the extreme
2) The Spa - set in a grotty annex. Lots of buckets to catch the rain coming through the ceiling when it rained, and a strong smell of damp. The treatments were good - provided you didn't go for the manicure, where the selection of nail varnishes are limited, and bottles which are past their best by are still used. I know, as I had one, and when the gloop on my nails failed to dry, I had to return to get it redone. How much does fresh nail varnish cost?
3) The breakfast. It floated no boats - it could have been so much better.

Would I return - one day, when there has been some capitol investment and an overhaul. Hopefully the Barcelo won't change its biggest asset: the staff
