We had a brilliant stay, staff were really friendly, room was lovely, and the food was delicious!
We stayed in room 17, it was very clean and nicely decorated with a lovely bathroom. Tea/coffee and biscuits were provided. We had dinner on the night, best meal I've had in a long time. Head chef Steve was lovely. Breakfast was great too.

Will definitely visit again :)

Thank you

Room Tip: The four poster beds are lovely

This hotel was recommended to me to stay at whilst up in the North of England on business and I was not disappointed. Located just off the A1, it allows easy access to most places that you would normally get to by staying in a town close to the road, except you are far enough removed from the roads it is peaceful. Even in the mornings, the back roads are quiet allowing you to get back onto the main road with a minimum of fuss.

I booked a double room and was surprised at how large it was, with a four poster bed that you literally had to climb into (they provide steps). Good service at check in and check out as expected from a Best Western, whilst keeping it's own character as a 12th century castle and standing out as different to a generic hotel.

For food, there is the option of the Hansards Restaurant, so named after the original inhabitants, which serves locally sourced food, well presented and cooked. The second option is the Farmer's bar located at the back of the hotel, and judging by conversations overheard is used by regulars, and seemingly often with young families. This is traditional bar food and although it could be getting cooked in the same kitchen, it is different from that served in the main restaurant.

A couple of extra things. Sat Nav using the post code will ask you to finally take a left to reach your destination, don't take the left but instead go forward 50 yards and you will see the entrance. Also, if you are interested in history/politics, ask a member of staff to see the Library or for the information sheet for the castle.

So all in all, recommended to those that would prefer to stay in a different style of hotel and that is quiet and surrounded by countryside, with a bit of history and friendly staff.

Thank you very much for your review. I am pleased that you were recommended our hotel. Being a privately owned and operated hotel we really do try to give great customer service and I am happy that you found this to be the case. I am also pleased that you enjoyed the meals you had at the hotel. I can understand your frustration with the sat nav. We have tried on numerous occasions to resolve this, so please accept my apologies, and we will continue to try and correct this issue. We would certainly look forward to welcoming you back to our hotel in the future.

Have recently stayed at Walworth and have to say cant wait to return. From the moment we arrived we couldnt fault the attentive, friendly staff and lovely surroundings. We stayed in a gorgeous suite and on opening our window we were greeted with the gentle bleat of sheep and occasional bird song. Our evening meal was very reasonable and hats off for presentation and taste. Our breakfast was suitably good with local organic milk and food very well cooked.

My husband and I got married here in 2009 and went back to stay in 2010. It really is a fantastic place. The staff were incredibly helpful and polite to us and our guests - nothing was too much hassle. We ate in Hansard's restaurant the second time and the food was delicious. They were accomodating with our requests for 'sauce on the side' and other quirks with no complaint. Breakfast in the Farmer's bar was lovely, and we can't help but keep going back for the carvery. We've been back again recently and the service and experience were just as good. We stayed in the King James Suite, which is a wonderful luxury. Our toddler loved playing in the outdoor play area and seeing the sheep in the next field! All in all, a fabulous place to stay.

This is the 2nd time we've stayed at Walworth - and you dont go back to a place unless you really like it.
We booked a suite and stayed in 2 different rooms on both occasions. The first suite was the Bayeaux suite - spacious rooms witha gorgeous view from a lovely old, stained glass window in the living area; bedroom in the tower with the heaviest curtains on the windows and four poster bed (real character, especially when we woke to find it had been snowing overnight) and the hallway between the two rooms with a fantastic view onto the patio area. It was so cosy and perfect to stay in winter time. Our only disappointment was the bathroom which was quite basic and didnt live up to the expectations compared to the other rooms.
More recently, we stayed in room 16 (not sure if it had a name). This suite overlooked the front of the castle and was perfect for a spring weekend. Lots of natural light the sun shining through the main window onto the living area and from the sofa you could see out of the side of the castle. The bedroom didnt disappoint as once again it had a stunning bed (so high I nearly needed a ladder to get into it, but didnt care!). It had such character. Where the bathroom in the other suite was a bit disappointing, this one was out of this world! The spa bath big enough for 2 was incredible - just sublime. If I had one ask of the management to make this room spectacular it's that it could use a shower cubicle. The room certainly has the space and whilst we love baths, others may like a shower option. Just a thought.
All in all, we love this place. Its a world away from the mayhem of life and we'd be happy to try another suite next time!

Room Tip: Chose a suite - you'll love it!

My husband and I stayed overnight at Walworth Castle to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We were greeted by friendly, accommodating staff who reflected the high standard of service we received from all of the staff. Our four poster room in the castle was decorated and furnished in a grand style which enhanced the historic feel (although the bathroom was modern). The highlight of our stay was our evening meal in Hansards Restaurant. The food was excellent as was the presentation and incredible value for money with a 3 course meal costing under £20!!!!
One thing which could be improved was the decor and furnishings. Some areas around the castle are 'tired and worn' looking rather than old and authentic. However, we will definately be returning and would reccommend visiting Walworth Castle, especially Hansards Restaurant.
