“Omani hospitality at its best - a unique experience.”
Reviewed December 14, 2013 for a stay in November 2013

We stayed with Mama Salma for one week and we really felt part of the family. The accommodation is comfortable and the location good. We learned much about Omani culture that would otherwise have been difficult. Our 2 children loved the garden and Salma ensured all our needs were catered for. Stay here if you want a unique Omani experience.

“A privilege to stay with Mamma Salma.”
Reviewed November 2, 2013 for a stay in October 2013

Firstly may I say that the Omani people are exceptional. Their kindness and hospitality to travellers is second to none. We found this wherever we went in Oman. Quite humbling really.

Garden Roomz. Excellent value for money.

Our Sat. Nav. directed us to the rear of the property, (We were not aware of this at the time) and struggled to find the property. The area in full of similar looking streets, and the road numbering is difficult to follow.

If you find where you think it should be....PHONE SALMA.... do not spent 20 minutes trying to find it. She will ask you where you are, and you will probably only be a 100 yards or so away from her home. It is worth the phone call.

Once you arrive, you get a warm welcome from Salma, and she lets you know a little bit about the area.

The rooms are set in a very well maintained garden.
You will have seen the photographs on this site.

We stayed in the rose/pink room. The bedroom is like a large studio really, plenty of furniture, a small kitchenette area with kettle, sink, crockery and cutlery. with an ensuite shower room. The room was spotless, and the airconditioning is very good.

There is a reflective coating on the windows that allows you to see out but ensures you have privacy inside, even if you do not close the curtains properly

Breakfasts....or should I say feast. Local foods, different most mornings.. not good for the waistline... but delicious.

Salma had breakfast with us and was concerned that there was something that we all liked...the food was good and there was a lot of it. It was so nice to have Salma with us, she told us a bit about herself and history, together with something of the area. She was happy to answer any of our questions.

Salma was an interesting companion at breakfast and not at all intrusive. I have a feeling that if you were not wanting to speak with her, she would excuse herself.

Breakfast and Salma. and her staff, were the best part of the stay, because we had a chance to meet an Omani in her own home. A different situation to the Omani hotel stays..far more personal..... I know I have gone on too much...but really loved it there and if returning to Muscat, would not stay anywhere else.

After our initial arrival, we found the property without any problem. If you have a car it is a great location. You can walk to local cafes /resaurants. If you are looking for European types, we did not see them.Having said that we found an excellent Kerralen Indian place.
About a15 minute walk away.

We did not use the taxis, so cannot comment on cost.

This place is a cultual gem. Please respect Salma and her home.

“Warm and Welcoming”

Staying with Mama Salma enriched our time in Oman immeasurably. She and her family are warm, gracious and easy to talk to on just about any topic. Our three year old daughter was whisked away by Salma's granddaughters to play every day and she had a ball. The fish ponds and turtles were great for a little one too. So much better than being cooped up in a multi-story hotel.

As reviews have stated, the taxi drivers have no idea where to go, as apparently "Way" numbers (street names) and house numbers are a relatively new thing. Carry the mud map that Salma provides with you at all times! You do have to walk 5 mins or so to a main road to catch a taxi, but even in the rain and pushing a pram it was never a major deal. We usually paid 3-5 Rials depending on where we were going.

The house does not have a sign saying "Garden Roomz" so you must look out for the house number.

We stayed here for 4 days and it was just terrific. The room itself is very large, clean and everything functions well. We didn't eat lunch the whole time we were there as the breakfasts Salma served were so filling :oD

Thankyou for your hospitality and good humour.

“A different side to Muscat”

A very warm and welcoming stay that allowed us to experience a different side to Muscat.
If you are interested in the Omani gastronomy, Selma does a great breakfast that allows you to sample the many varying cuisines in Oman.
When considering the types of accommodation in surrounding Muscat, Garden Roomz is a relaxed residential style lodge, amongst some developed slick hotels.

This aside, Garden Roomz was incredibly difficult to find, as there were no signs indicating the place of residence, so beware traveling here late at night or without a sat' nav – good planning should help this.
I do believe that if you are traveling to Garden Roomz as a part of your holiday, then a car would be essential as the district is restrictive to get to and from by foot – most visitors arrive by the motorway but take care on the roads as the Omani's drive fast!

There is one takeaway/restaurant within reasonable walking distance and a small selection of shops for groceries and water. We found that as Garden Roomz provides basic meal preparation facilities (sink, work top and fridge) that allowed you to put together a simple meal of salad, bread, hummus etc' for nights you just want to stay local.

Selma had a relaxed and charming attitude to life, religion and politics which she shared. This made discussing current affairs feel very comfortable and as the country is going through some drastic changes, hearing what she had to say was worth every second.

When traveling about Muscat, I felt that Western dress code was acceptable, especially with the surge of tourism coming in from the cruise port terminal. Something like a long skirt and t-shirt is fine. In places of religious importance and worship it is expected to respect and follow the dress codes - for women head, wrists and ankles/feet should be covered.

The Sultan Qaboos Grande Mosque is beautiful and worth a morning visit – there are tours if required and photography is allowed throughout.
The Muttrah Souq is very touristy and whilst worth an afternoon browse, its full of expensive touristy stuff.
The Palace and much of the old town is pleasant to walk around (fingers crossed for parking).
The museum of cultural heritage was really good to visit as it gave a concise history of Oman.
I would always recommend a visit to the supermarkets to view the local food.

If you did decide you wanted a 'Westerners beach day' then you need to head south, somewhere like the Shangri La resort or the Dive Centre. Here and a few surrounding resorts you will pay to use the beach and hotels facilities.
Whilst I wouldn't like to admit to this, it did break up the holiday to be able to sunbath and have a beer. The beaches are kept spotless and the resorts have everything you need. It does however feel like you are in a different country. We had a complete opposite experience when heading North of Muscat, to a resort where the beach was dirty and the resort and very run down (North is less developed but culturally interesting never the less).

Some other bits:
The visa you need to enter Oman is purchased when you get off the plane. Its not expensive but I forget its actual costs.
Some hotels have alcohol licenses and some do not, so if you like to relax with a glass of wine is worth considering.
There is a huge Indian population in Muscat, specifically brought in for industrial labour – this adds further to the gastronomy!
Muscat boasts large 5-star hotel and sport developments but the heart of Omani culture is found away from this and worth looking for.

I enjoyed my week staying at Garden Roomz, a truly wonderful experience. Salma is a wonderful host and really made me feel welcome. The location is great, not far from the airport, Grand Mosque, shops and short trip to the Corniche, very easy to get around. I highly recommend the Garden Roomz in Muscat, I enjoyed a very relaxing and comfortable stay.
