Thank you Girosole (Gabrielle and Luciano) for our unforgettable trip. Each of our accommodations were perfect in the 4 towns we stayed in. Being our first self guided trip - we found the hiking route instructions to be perfect. Once we needed to confirm our route with Gabrielle and he responded to our call immediately. We are regular hikers at home and found the recommended distances to be ideal for a great day of exercise with sufficient time to experience each town.
We have already recommended this company to many of our friends and look forward to future routes they have organized. Apparently one opening up in Chianti region I will be interested in trying!
Off season (travelling in March) didn't matter to us. Weather was up and down but still totally great hiking. I'd rather hike in cooler temperatures than hot summer weather.

Restaurant recommendations were perfect as well. I have nothing critical to share - all exceeded our expectations. Thank you!!!

My daughter and I took a self-guided tour of Tuscany for 8 amazing days. The trip was well organized for us, the directions were perfect and the scenery was breathtaking. We did the trip without a guide but our helper, Gabriele was so helpful and was easy to get in touch with. We wanted to alter our route one day due to weather and he had the perfect solution that turned out to be easily as much fun as the original route. Thank you Girosole for the trip of a lifetime. I can’t recommend this company highly enough.

This was our second trip with Girosole, done in July 2017. Our first trip was in Oct 2015 when we took their Tuscany self-guided hike. That was a 5* trip and led us to sign up for their guided Dolomites hike, June 30-July 5 2017. Yet another 5* - slammed out of the ballpark, in fact!

As with our prior Tuscany hike, Luciano (in Colorado) and the rest of the Girosole staff (in Italy, making the hotel etc. arrangements) were helpful and wonderful. Hotels, meals, itinerary - everything was just about perfect! Our guide in the Dolomites, Riccardo, was absolutely outstanding: cheerful, accommodating, professional, good company, and a fountain of knowledge for all things Italian and relating to mountaineering, climbing, wilderness skiing, avalanches, etc.! (not that we will ever climb or wilderness ski, but it was very interesting nonetheless) Riccardo's English was excellent, too (his parents made him study English as a student, and he went to high school in Texas for a year), which was great as our Italian was limited.

My husband and I were nearly 69 and 65 years old, respectively, and we traveled with our friends, another couple, in their late 50's. In retrospect, this was the best way we could have done this Dolomites trip. Although there are marked paths, the signposts were not frequent and it was wonderful and stress-free to just follow Riccardo, rather than worry about whether or not we were on the right path. Also, the routes chosen were spectacularly scenic, varied, and do-able. Riccardo was very safety-conscious, checking on weather forecasts and also watching the skies. These are mountains and they create their own, very unpredictable weather. Apparently afternoon thunderstorms are common. We had two days of off-and-on bad weather (luckily the worst of it happened while we were safely at our hotel) and it definitely would have been dangerous to have been in high exposed areas during a thunderstorm. Knowing that Riccardo was keeping an eye on things gave us a lot of comfort and security. Sometimes he would suggest carrying on (in spite of wind & rain) to get to a viewpoint - and we were always glad we followed his suggestion. Other times he pointed out that we were unlikely to see anything at our summit destinations because of the weather (rain and clouds), so he suggested turning back (which we were glad to do!).

All our accommodations were wonderful. Most meals were included for this trip and they were wonderful too. The scenery was amazing. The Dolomites are surprisingly varied in rock color and landforms. We were there end of June/early July, so many alpine flowers were in bloom, and they were also varied and beautiful. There were high lush green valleys or mountainsides with cows, their bells jangling in a sweet and gentle chorus. One rifugio that we stopped at, on our last day's hike, had freshly baked bread (the BEST bread ever, 80% rye, 20% spelt, fermented for a day before baking) cooling outside its wood-fired outdoor oven. They also had homemade cheese and butter made from the milk and cream of the cows and goats wandering around nearby. I.e. there are beautiful mountains but they are civilized, too!

I dreamt about this trip for 2 weeks afterwards - that's what a huge impression it made on me. We have traveled all over the world and done outstanding walking trips for the past 3-1/2 years, but this trip was one of the best yet, featuring not only spectacularly beautiful hikes and surroundings, but creature comforts such as comfy lodging and good food (b'fasts & evenings - lunches were eaten on the trail and basic), and also a very professional yet fun & personable guide sharing knowledge of history, Italian culture, and the outdoors.

Thank you Girosole, Riccardo, Luciano, and staff for a wonderful trip - memories for a lifetime!!!

We enjoyed a wonderful 6 days in Puglia with our hiking guide, Marinella & her driver Gian Franco. Marinella was an enthusiastic guide & not only delightful but intelligent, thoughtful, personable & very knowledgeable about the Puglia/Basilicata region & its culture, history, food, wine, flora & fauna.
The excellent service began with Luciano who responded promptly to my emails & at our request booked extra nights in Lecce & Alberobello. On our first day Marinella arrived promptly at our Bari hotel to collect us for our drive to Matera. She was armed with a folder with the itinerary, maps of each town, sightseeing suggestions, restaurants, contact details, etc. On our arrival at our hotel in Matera we enjoyed a coffee with Marinella while discussing our plans for the next few days.
Gian Franco, our driver, was not only an excellent driver but also knowledgeable & easy to get along with. In fact it felt like we were touring the region with friends. Both spoke excellent English & understood us perfectly unless we attempted to speak in our very poor Italian!
Marinella's restaurant suggestions & the included lunch and dinner meals were excellent & couldn't be faulted. In fact at Soul Kitchen in Matera the wait staff kept bringing out delicious food until we could not eat any more!
Our walks were enjoyable, interesting & paced perfectly especially as there was so many sights to take in. One of the highlights was a 10km walk through the Puglia countryside near Alberolbello. We explored the local countryside following ancient routes surrounded by dry stone walls plus sampled wild blackberries & miniature apples & pears as we walked. Marinella was very flexible & not locked into a program which suited us perfectly. She added interesting excursions such as one to Galatina (on the way to Gallipoli) & changed the location of walks to avoid the huge August holiday crowds.
Marinella was also an excellent liaison with the Italian speaking owner of the Villa Viola & managed to organise a clothesline, iron, taxi, etc during our stay. She also recommended other excursions that we could do during our extra days in Lecce.
We chose the comfort level of accommodation & were not disappointed. The hotels in Matera & Alberobello were excellent value & Villa Viola was clean, large & well located to the old town of Lecce.
We suggest that fellow walkers add a night in Alberobello to their itinerary as not only was the afternoon walk past olive groves, orchards, Trulli, etc enjoyable but at night the town is beautiful. During the day Alberobello is inundated with tourists so you don't get a true appreciation of its beauty. Marinella suggested & booked a table at Terra Madre, a local restaurant serving seasonal food straight from their vegetable garden. It was an exceptional meal served by friendly & knowledgeable waiters!
Under the cloudless blue skies of Puglia, we loved to meander the lanes, alleyways & streets of Matera, Alberobello, Lecce, Ostuni, Gallipoli & Otranto & were beguiled by random splashes of purple & pink bougainvillea. We would highly recommend this tour with Girosole to anyone who wants to enjoy & learn about the Puglia/ Basilicata region & its ancient towns heavy with the tangible past.

A hiking holiday is my go to place for pure joy and serenity. And our recent 4 day self guided hike in Tuscany (Val d'Orica) exceeded our expectations. Luciano was fantastic in designing our hike and communicating throughout the planning stages. Then when we arrived in Siena the lovely Gabriele got us ready and sent us on our way through the stunning Tuscan Hills to enjoy the sights, sounds and incredible culinary delights (+ delicious wines) of the villages we walked through. The written instructions were perfect & the mobile phone with the GPS tracker was very easy to use. Didn't get lost once. So lucky to have spent the journey with 2 great friends. We had so many "pinch me moments". Thanks to the entire Girosole team from start to finish for making the entire experience so incredible. Wishing you great success ... need to plan the next hike with you very soon.
