“This is Heaven!”
Reviewed October 27, 2011 for a stay in September 2011

We (four couples) rented Villa Carda for a week at the end of September in 2011 in celebration of a 50th birthday. Two years ago we travelled as a group to Amalfi and rented a villa there with much success. I love doing the research and so when we decided on Tuscany, I happily started combing the internet looking at options. And boy oh boy, there are thousands. We settled on Villa Carda for several reasons: close proximity to other Tuscan towns/villages/cities, separate bedrooms and en suites for each couple, a swimming pool, a covered eating area directly adjacent to the kitchen for al fresco dining, a large amount of space so we wouldn't all be bumping into one another, good design, and service inspired responses from the owners during the back and forth emails as we were making our decision. We weren't disappointed. Andrea Franceschini and his father Antonio were wonderful hosts. Kind, helpful, informative and accommodating. The property is spectacular. The grounds immaculately groomed.

The eight of us arrived late on a Saturday afternoon from a variety of destinations so we had pre-arranged (via Andrea) for a local cook to come in and prepare dinner. All I can say is "do it!" Excellent value for the money, exceptional food and the comfort and ease of having your meal prepared for you while you connect with your travel companions over a glass or two of wine. The experience, the food and the cook were so amazing that we hired her again on our last night at the villa.

We had three rental cars between the eight of us. The group did day trips to Arrezzo, Sienna, Florence, Poppi, Cortona and a few other spots. All with ease and pleasure.

But do take the time to carve out a day or two and just sit still at the villa. The beauty, peace and glory of this property will soothe your soul and renew your spirit. Just writing about it causes a sense of calm to descend upon me. Very good for one's health.

Before I give you the one downside, let me restate how service inspired and helpful Andrea and Antonio were but if we were to give any criticism it would be as it relates to our day of departure.

Check out was at 10:00am. We reconfirmed our intentions with the owners the night prior. Our group had planned to have one last (peaceful) al fresco breakfast on the terrace before we departed but the grounds crew and cleaners descended on the property at 7:00am. The noise of the lawn cutting equipment and the proximity of the cleaners made us feel like we were intruders and that the owners were in a hurry for us to leave.

If one has paid to rent a property until 10:00am on the day of departure, then it was our expectation that we would have the privacy of that property until the agreed upon departure time.

Still, I would go back to Villa Carda. Still, I would recommend that you go to Villa Carda. Still, the memories of Villa Carda will live happily in my heart for years and years to come.

Go if you can.

Management Response
22 Nov 2011
First of all, thank you for your review and for the positive opinion about Villa Carda.
I'd like to clarify one point in the comment:
We respected the will of our guests about the check-out at 10.00 without showing impatience and without forcing them for leaving the villa in advance. For this reason we started to work (esclusively outside) only after we verified that all our guests were active (they were putting the luggages in the cars). In order to give them the possibility to enjoy their breakfast in the terrace we started to mow at 8 o'clock from the farest point of the large park ( about 500 m by the villa). Our guests always appreciate the huge park of Villa Carda but not everybody can imagine how much work and time it requires to be so well kept. To disturb as less as possible the guests of the villa, we mow the park esclusively on Saturday morning before the arrival of the next clients. The cleaning women start cleaning the external part of the villa (swimming pool, wellness area) and they wait the check out to clean the interior of the villa. This is what generally happens in all the hotels and in the holiday villas and it is necessary for a functional management of the structure.

“Fabulous week for a dozen Americans!!!”

Seven members of a 1962 Minnesota high school graduating class and five spouses spent a glorious week at Villa Carda. It's even more beautiful than it looks on the website and the owners always took the extra step to make sure we were having a wonderful time. The wine cellar was superb and one of the best parts of the week was the ability to visit nearby villages and wander the streets, tour the ancient buildings and generally soak up the Tuscany atmosphere. We would all return in a heartbeat.

“Heaven in Tuscany”

Our stay at the Villa Cardine was simply heaven! The villa is absolutely gorgeous, luxury in the midst of Tuscany. Our hosts Antonio and Andrea were always available, keeping everything beautifully managed, willing to give suggestions of local places of interest, or just leave us alone if we didn't need anything. The bedrooms and common living areas are beautifully decorated with local colors and art, and the outside veranda for eating is heaven. The pool area and health spa are state of the art and made us feel like we were staying in a 5 star resort. The property is gorgeous, pictures don't even do it justice. Renting a villa sight-unseen can be a little scary, but this property far exceeded any of our hopes and dreams ahead of time. The location in a valley that isn't as well known to tourists was definitely a big advantage. The surrounding small villages and hill towns were welcoming, and not overrun with other Americans. I can't imagine what could possibly have been better. Our week with friends was perfect.

“Wonderful Villa Carda”

Our group of 12 friends settled in 6 different, individually-styled and lovely bedrooms, all with bathrooms. The Villa has been beautifully designed and decorated in a true Tuscan style, and it is luxurious as well as welcoming. We were lucky with the weather - we gathered all the time on the large terrace with plenty of room for all of us sit, eat or just relax. The pool area is first class, with monogrammed chairs and an electrically-operated cover so that we could maintain the temperature of the pool. The grounds are vast and perfectly maintained, with really extraordinary views to the Tuscan hills. The owners, Andrea and his father Antonio, were there every morning to maintain the grounds and were very friendly and accommodating indeed, though unobtrusive. They even arranged for a delivery each morning of croissants, bread etc. The spa is separate from the house, containing a jacuzzi, workout machines and a steam room, all in a perfect spa atmosphere. The kitchen is small and quite dark, which was our only problem (we all love to cook) but we soon overcame this. Home-made pizzas cooked in the traditional wood-fired pizza oven on the terrace were a highlight! Nearby, we loved Poppi: enjoy a beer at the bar at the top of the village with wonderful views, and a really good restaurant serving authentic Tuscan food. And we enjoyed Cortona - quite touristy, but otherwise charming and some very good bargains on eg leather goods. All in all, we enjoyed a wonderful week at Villa Carda, and would recommend it to anyone.

“most amazing villa on earth!”
Reviewed September 11, 2011 for a stay in August 2011

there were 13 of us at Villa Carda and so much room for everyone. The bedrooms were so beautiful- even the smallest was similar to a top 5* boutique hotel. The wholw property was immaculate and so clean. The wellness centre has been built to the highest standard, and the huge garden led out to spectacular open ended views. Andrea and his father were attentive but un-obtrusive, and the cook that we had for 2 nights created the most fantastic meals which we all enjoyed- plenty of leftovers for lunch the next day! A truly magical place- will definitely return.

“What a brilliant villa”
Reviewed September 8, 2011 for a stay in August 2011

We stayed at the Villa Carda for 2 weeks in August having booked it over 12 months in advance based on fabulous reviews and great pictures. The reality outweighed the anticipation - what a brilliant place, great views, great house and great venue.
We made the most of the place - especially the pool and pool area - plus the occasional stroll in the grounds.
Visited Cortona (steep climb but great views); Siena (what a great place); Poppi (so pretty); Florence (v. hot and book venues in advance) and Arezzo (a favourite for food and drink). Bibbiena is best for supermarket shopping; Rassina has a few little shops.
Our advice - make the most of the villa as it is superb and Andrea and Antonio are great hosts. Our other advice - don't fly in via Florence we were delayed 6 hours on the way back as the winds were in the wrong direction and it was hot!!!

“If you don’t rent this villa, it’ll be your loss!”
Reviewed September 2, 2011 for a stay in July 2011

Our group of twelve (3 families of four including 6 teenagers) recently came back from Italy where we stayed at Villa Carda for a week. Words are hard to describe this place but “Fantastico!”, “Eccelente!” and “Magnifico!” quickly come to mind.

This place is unbelievable. The setting is absolutely beautiful, the property is gorgeous and manicured (they come around and clean the pool daily and make sure everything is fine!). Trust me...the pictures (as beautiful as they are) do not render justice. This place is even better than the pictures show.

Rooms are all beautiful and can easily accommodate 12 people (I suspect you could even squeeze a few more if needed). The villa is very clean and has that rustic charm which all of us absolutely loved. The health center was a total hit with the teenagers!

If you plan to go to Tuscany...this is the place to stay! It’s a bit removed from the large cities but that’s what made the location even better in my mind. From there we easily made day trips to cities and regions such as Florence, Sienna, Arezzo, Cortona, Chianti, and San Gimignano so it certainly isn’t too far.

Not to be overlooked is the kindness of Andrea and his father Antonio. They were perfect hosts. While we didn’t spend much time with them, our encounters were always extremely pleasant and helpful as they provided a few pointers of where to go based on what we wanted to do.

I could go on and on and still feel that my review wouldn’t do justice. We would recommend this place to everyone (and we’ve already started doing so!). As I state in the title.......if you don’t rent this place...it’ll be your loss.

Listen...the only knock on this place is that there are so many beautiful places to see and visit nearby that you won’t be able to enjoy the villa as much as you would like! That’s exactly what happened to us.

Our group was unanimous......every single one of us would go back in a heartbeat.
