We went to Lake Garda on our honeymoon as after the wedding we hadn't quite got enough funds to go our dream honeymoon to California! Well this ended up being our dream honeymoon anyway!!! The Hotel Astoria is a lovely family run hotel. Every member of staff was always polite, smiley and friendly to us and the service was great. As it was our honeymoon, we got a room upgrade so we had a lake facing terrace. This was a really nice surprise as you are literally across the road from the Lake. The bottle of Prosecco and fruit bowl were also a very nice gesture. The room was spacious and very clean. There is no air conditioning and when we were there temperatures in the day were mid 30s so it was rather warm. However, most nights we pulled the outdoor shutter down and left the door open and we didn't suffer too much.
The 4 course meal every night was always well cooked and we always enjoyed the starting course of a salad bar. There was then a pasta course, a meat course and a dessert. Some of the combos of food were sometimes a little strange but you were getting so much food it really didn't matter if one of the courses didn't take your fancy! You selected your meals the night before and there was at least 2 or 3 options for each course so you could choose what you wanted. We chose to eat out a few nights as the meal is served very promptly at 7 so it could limit where you went on days out. We went to the opera in Verona one evening and the hotel prepared a packed lunch of bread, meat, cheese and fruit as we had told them we would not be dining that evening.
Drinks you have in the evening are placed on a tab for your room as are any drinks you purchase from the pool bar. You then pay for them the night before you check out. We had no problems doing this as we only had a few drinks per night and then bought others seperate from the hotel bar with our cash.
The hotel pool is lovely and had plenty of sun loungers and great views of the Dolomites. Although we prefered to swim in the Lake. Malcesine is a 30-40 minute walk away but we enjoyed the walk! It's very flat and right by the lake so you get great views. We got used to doing it there and back most days. There are also excellent transport links to places around the lake. The bus stops for traffic travelling each way are just outside the hotel. The Tourist bus runs until past midnight so you could always get back late. It can get cramped though as it is small. There was also the local really lovely air conditioned local buses which run all the way up to Riva back down to Verona! They run until about 8 o clock. We paid 11 Euros each for a day ticket but then went to Bardolino, Garda and Riva so it was well worth it.
The good thing about being a little out of Malcesine is that it is quieter. We would often go for sunset walks on the beach and there were only a few other people around. The little shop right next to the hotel sells beer which they will open for you so you can have a drink right next to the lake at sunset! There is also a little pizzeria where you can get a take away pizza to take onto the beach with you day or night. We still really loved the buzz of Malcesine in the evening but here we got the best of both worlds.
We will definitely be returning to Lake Garda as we fell in love with it and we would return to this lovely hotel again.

Room Tip: The lake facing terrace room we had was lovely and although it was free as our honeymoon upgrade, I...

My wife an I went to the Hotel Astoria for our 20th wedding anniversary and were blown away with it. The hotel was lovely and the location fabulous, looking straight across the lake to Limone. The staff were all really friendly and helpful. The bedroom was really clean and comfortable and had its own balcony. It was a lovely 35 minute walk into Malcesine but for the faint hearted a local bus service stopped right outside the hotel every hour or so. I would recommend this hotel for any couples after a quiet holiday in a fabulous location.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the front overlooking the lake.

We stayed in the Astoria for 11 days on Thomas Cook holidays. The room was very clean with spacious balcony. Staff was very helpful. The was food exceptional. Dinner comprised of 4 courses, variety of fresh salads, pasta dishes or fish or meat dishes and desserts. Service was very good, (4 courses have to be served slowly otherwise you'll struggle to eat them!) Never heard of the hotel policy for not having drinks in the room! We had our drinks there all the time. I think some party makers once reminded to be quiet write rubbish reviews!
I would definitely recommend this hotel!

The staff were rude and unhelpful and if you want to have some drinks in the hotel at night - DON'T. They don't let you pay on Credit card unless your bill is above 300 Euros. Also when sitting in the bar lounge area there are no staff to serve you drinks.

At dinner the staff were great for the first few days and then terrible. It was taking over 1.5 hours to be served dinner. This meant that we missed the bus into Mascelsine and the next one was an hour later which meant its too late to come home again (last bus at 12.20pm). The hotel is a 40 min walk into the main town, a bit too far away from everything.

You are also not allowed to bring your own drinks into your hotel room (bizarre) and this resulted in a number of 'dirty looks' from the manageress. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone.

Room Tip: No air con

Just returned from this hotel having had a fab time. The hotel is a small family run hotel. We found all the staff there very friendly and helpful, nothing we asked was too much trouble., the standard of cleanliness was the highest I have ever encountered (from someone who is very fussy).
Round the pool was very civilisied no need to get up at 6 to put your towel out.as the hotel had more than enough beds for everyone.
There is no entertainment provided but that made it a plus for us as this is not the type of resort that needs it.
There is only one pool which on entry was quite chilly with no seperate area for children and no shallow end although there was a small grassed area with some swings for them. Not sure I would have found it suitable if I had been travelling when my son was much younger.
The rooms were spotlessly clean and towels and bed linen seemed to be changed every day the only slight was there is no air conditioning which made it very hot in the rooms at night. We were given a fan ,after asking for one, but even then the room was still very warm. The food was very nice and there was several choices every day.

Never before have I been to such an awful hotel, the staff are rude (and it's not a language barrier either!), the food is rubbish and the rooms are nothing more than 1*. There is no air conditioning in either the ros or the hotel and it was baking hot, the rooms have nothing more than a bed in them and the hotel is a full 60 minute walk into Malcesine. There is nothing more than one shop outside of the hotel, you have to go to Malcesine for everything else.

This hotel completely ruined our holiday.

Malcesine is absolutely beautiful, and many of the hotels are too but this hotel is probably one of the worst on the island. Don't even think about booking here!

The hotel was one of the best ever. Very clean, very friendly staff, family run so total attention and best service always. The staff were also very well equipped and informed on the places of interest and handled all bookings necessary at all times. They were very willing to listen, offer suggestions and also appreciate constructive feedback.
Food was very good and quite varied with dinner booked on a daily basis with a different menu daily. The pool and swiming facilities were the best as the beach was just across the road and if one wanted somewhere quieter the pool area was the ideal choice. Although away from the centre, a Tourist Bus which takes you to the centre of any province at a minimal charge and works up to midnight. was also available. This service was also very punctual and efficient.
I would recommend this hotel and also this place to anyone wishing to have a relaxing and tranquil holiday where tours are in abundance, the views are Exceptional, the place divine and the mood peaceful and relaxed throughout.. Thank you for giving us such an awesome holiday..
