We went to Lake Garda on our honeymoon as after the wedding we hadn't quite got enough funds to go our dream honeymoon to California! Well this ended up being our dream honeymoon anyway!!! The Hotel Astoria is a lovely family run hotel. Every member of staff was always polite, smiley and friendly to us and the service was great. As it was our honeymoon, we got a room upgrade so we had a lake facing terrace. This was a really nice surprise as you are literally across the road from the Lake. The bottle of Prosecco and fruit bowl were also a very nice gesture. The room was spacious and very clean. There is no air conditioning and when we were there temperatures in the day were mid 30s so it was rather warm. However, most nights we pulled the outdoor shutter down and left the door open and we didn't suffer too much.
The 4 course meal every night was always well cooked and we always enjoyed the starting course of a salad bar. There was then a pasta course, a meat course and a dessert. Some of the combos of food were sometimes a little strange but you were getting so much food it really didn't matter if one of the courses didn't take your fancy! You selected your meals the night before and there was at least 2 or 3 options for each course so you could choose what you wanted. We chose to eat out a few nights as the meal is served very promptly at 7 so it could limit where you went on days out. We went to the opera in Verona one evening and the hotel prepared a packed lunch of bread, meat, cheese and fruit as we had told them we would not be dining that evening.
Drinks you have in the evening are placed on a tab for your room as are any drinks you purchase from the pool bar. You then pay for them the night before you check out. We had no problems doing this as we only had a few drinks per night and then bought others seperate from the hotel bar with our cash.
The hotel pool is lovely and had plenty of sun loungers and great views of the Dolomites. Although we prefered to swim in the Lake. Malcesine is a 30-40 minute walk away but we enjoyed the walk! It's very flat and right by the lake so you get great views. We got used to doing it there and back most days. There are also excellent transport links to places around the lake. The bus stops for traffic travelling each way are just outside the hotel. The Tourist bus runs until past midnight so you could always get back late. It can get cramped though as it is small. There was also the local really lovely air conditioned local buses which run all the way up to Riva back down to Verona! They run until about 8 o clock. We paid 11 Euros each for a day ticket but then went to Bardolino, Garda and Riva so it was well worth it.
The good thing about being a little out of Malcesine is that it is quieter. We would often go for sunset walks on the beach and there were only a few other people around. The little shop right next to the hotel sells beer which they will open for you so you can have a drink right next to the lake at sunset! There is also a little pizzeria where you can get a take away pizza to take onto the beach with you day or night. We still really loved the buzz of Malcesine in the evening but here we got the best of both worlds.
We will definitely be returning to Lake Garda as we fell in love with it and we would return to this lovely hotel again.
