We had lunch at Osteria del Noce during our stay in Elba for our honeymoon. For starters we had mussels and scallops in a delicious sauce. For main course we had a seafood pasta. Both dishes was great. The seafood was really fresh and nicely prepared. The staff was friendly and the view was perfect.

The Osteria del Noce (Osteria of the Walnut tree) is wonderful. From the moment we arrived we were greeted with warmth and tradition. This is both Elba and Liguria in feel and menu, a place that clearly loves the food of land and sea, family secrets and local producers. All is fresh and made with careful thought and real methods. The only difficulty is in choosing from such an interesting and alluring menu! Many choices feature the island’s seafood. The menu is of course in Italian here, as this is an Italian restaurant not an enterprise geared towards tourists; quite the opposite. There are restaurants next to the sea with fussier settings and English menus that have less interesting dishes for higher prices. People in the Osteria were generous and welcoming, and were happy to translate the menu and explain dishes to us. The specials menu was exciting and from it for a main I chose gnocchi with a creamy parmigiana sauce with zucchini and baby octopus. It was rich and filling. The gnocchi were brown not white, made with whole-wheat and potato, so wholesome, but light not chewy. This is an osteria not a ristorante which of course means food comes first not ceremony (although service was excellent). Wine is drunk from small tumblers like water if drinking house wine. Wine glasses for bottles (and I’m sure if we asked!). A half litre of the house red and white was €10 each and very decent. There is a good range of local wine from Elba on the separate red and white menus as well as Tuscan wine, and sparkling. A good range of everything but carefully considered. The primo piatto in the picture is green (spinach) tagliatelle with red mullet which was delightful. The pasta was all home made. For appetizers we had tuna carpaccio and tomato, the tuna looking dry in dark strips but melting in the mouth, and mussels with pepper, which was a big bowl of mussels (€11) with, I think, water, lots of pepper, white wine, lemon and olive oil and salt, baked at high heat rather than steamed. The mussels were concentrated and the pepper was intense and satisfying. They tasted so much better than mussels I’ve cooked in England (of course)! They put bread in the bowl, a sponge without a crust. There was a bowl of different bread on the table from the beginning, from a trolley of different breads by the counter panelled in dark woods. A bottle of fine local olive oil was put on our table with the bread. Everything came quickly although the restaurant was full. Old prints of the Ligurian coast are framed on the walls with newspaper cuttings and pottery. The owners brought the influence of Ligurian cuisine and have paired it with great produce from Elba. There is a long terrace outside with climbing flowers and lanterns, tables overlooking the hills sweeping below to the sea, and the miniature shining yellow walls of Poggio. We had booked that same evening and so got a table inside but we didn’t care. We walked away down the old stone steps of lovely Marciana in wonder. Grazie mille!

We were 9, total bill was 320€, approximately 36 per person which is a good price for what we got: 4 bottles of wine, 9 appetizers and one fish each. Staff was super welcoming. Compared to the other restaurants in Marciana marina which charge over 50€, this one is a typical Tuscan restaurant with excellent quality and medium to low prices.

Had a superb Tagiatelle Vongale here, the service is good, food fantastic and the views over the valley are really good. Staff were friendly and although not much english spoken the waitress with a very good command of english was assigned to our table which made the experience even more pleasant.
