Shortly after moving to Italy, I took a weekend excursion to Orvieto and my friends and I booked this cooking class. We had a fantastic time! About a year later, I took another cooking class in Sorrento and it didn't even come close to comparing to the one at Decugnano Dei Barbi! We were picked up at our agriturismo and driven out to the site. After a short tour of the vineyard, we went into the converted chapel to start the cooking class. The woman who taught us was just wonderful. She didn't speak English but our interpreter was also fantastic. We learned a lot but had fun in the process. Our class was made up of several groups, some families, some friends, and everyone had a great time. After we prepped all the food, we then sat down to the table where we were served all the food that we'd prepared and it was paired with wines from the winery! Afterward we were able to purchase wine and olive oil produced on the estate. It was the most fun I've had with a cooking class and it was a very full day! I would recommend this to any of my friends and family visiting the Orvieto area.

It was a windy morning in the late fall going all downhill from the main house of the Barbi's estate, the ancient place named "Decugnano" [maybe "The well-known Janus field"], in front of the Cliff on which the town of Orvieto was built-up by the Etruscans, when we got acquainted with Anna Rita, our leader. She led us among the old vineyards of the estate, those which rest at the bottom of the prehistoric Sea during the Pliocene age, to the centuries-old sparkling wines' cellar aging, carved into the rock (once, at the beginning of the 13th century, re-used by the monks) and drove us in the tasting of the company array of wines paired with traditional Umbrian dishes: 1) sparkling wine made in the méthode traditionelle (dosage zéro); 2) Dry white "Orvieto Classico Superiore" docg 2015; 3) Syrah igt 2012; 4) 'Pourriture noble' 2015. The cooking lesson was directed by the chef Rosanna. We met her in the kitchen close to the desecrated chapel of the estate: a kind and sweet lady who lives in the surroundings of the Barbi's estate. Rosanna proceeded to show us how to make lumachelle, ombrichelli, involtini, tozzetti and much more of the secret recipes! Trust me, experience to be repeated at least another time in the life!

Anna Rita welcomed us as if we were family. The tour of the vineyard and caves was so interesting and informative and relaxed. Rosanna gave us cooking instructions and encouraged us to "try this at home". Next came dinner with wine pairings that you can only imagine. Thank you Anna Rita for your expertise and your warmth. We felt like we were sitting around a huge table of friends.
If you only do one wine tour, make it Decagnano Dei Barbi!

We were a group of six women staying in Orvieto. Anna Rita arranged our taxi to Decugnano (20 euros p/p). It was a lovely 30 min. drive We thought the outing was just for us, but another group of about 8 joined us for the wine tour and cooking. It was very hot and hilly. 3 of us decided to skip the wine tour and waited for everyone in the chapel where the cooking class was held. We got to meet the wonderful Rosana, our instructor chef, before the others arrived. One single table was set for a meal for all of us. The other table had wooden boards and rolling pins. We helped prepare several dishes with all fresh ingredients...3 different kinds of bruschetta, a pasta , stuffed eggplant entrée and cookies. All the food was so good. Each course was paired with their delicious wine. We went home with the recipes, aprons, and hundreds of great photos. The outdoor surroundings are beautiful. Great fun and excellent meal. Highly recommend. Grazie!

Dear GardaGal0912,

We would like to thank you for your time and effort. This summer was the hottest on record, we have never encountered temperature like 2017!
We glad, however, you had a good time with your friends, hopefully you might try the recipes at home!

All the best!

Highly recommend this great experience to learn to cook your own Italian meal. Learning from Rosanna, who hardly spoke English, was awesome. She was a fabulous teacher. Anna Rita's tour of the property and winery was so interesting and getting to taste and pair the wines with our home cooked meal really made the day. Anna is so knowledgeable about the wine business and she was with us all through the cooking class to help translate and cook with us. My family of three (husband and daughter age 17) will never forget this experience and are anxious to try some our new recipes at home. Anna Rita was very responsive to all my emails and questions as I booked this tour. She even organized a taxi to pick us up in Orvieto and get us to their vineyard. I can't thank Anna Rita and Rosanna enough for a wonderful day. .
