The views over Positano are amazing and it's great having a room with a patio to step onto when you wake up. The rooms are rustic, however, with a tiny bathroom with an even smaller shower. We were fine with all of this, but we realized on our last of three nights there that my wife had been bitten numerous times by bed bugs. The cleanliness of the hotel leaves alot to be desired. Also, you don't really need it if you're comfortable sleeping with the doors open, but there's no air conditioning.

Giancarlo M, Owner at Pensione Maria Luisa - Amalfi Coast, responded to this reviewResponded July 28, 2015

Dear Henry,

thanks for your review and apologies for what happened with the beg bugs.

We confirm that we had cases of bed bugs in the past (which is when our guest Henry stayed with us), and we are sorry for that. If you had shared this with us we would have offered a full compensation.

As soon as we realised this we replaced our cleaning personnel, operated a thorough disinfestation of the rooms and replaced all the mattresses with new ones. These measures were taken so that it will never happen again. You will be surprised about how clean are our rooms now!

Finally: our rooms don't have air conditioning but we provide electric fans!

Carlo

We just finished a whirlwind driving tour around Italy, and a portion of it was two nights at Pensione Maria & Luisa, which we booked at 6pm the evening of check in before we drove OVER the peninsula on THAT road= ) We finally arrived at 7:30 or 8:00, checked into beautiful balcony rooms with HOT showers in February!! Carlo was helpful and called approximately 10 restaurants to find us a dinner. Only one was open (the season doesn't start in Positano until March). So we went to Bar Ristorante Bruno and had a fabulous meal overlooking the water with the restaurant to ourselves!! The value for Maria Luisa is good, the free wifi is very unreliable. The coffee is not. But Carlo does provide a couple of refrigerators so you can store food, milk, yogurt etc. Because in February there will be NO COFFEE or BREAKFAST available ANYWHERE in Positano!! Still had an awesome time for little money= ) Would definitely recommend!

Room Tip: Ask for Balcony room

The Balcony View and Carlo is what makes this simple accomodation supersan!

We stayed two nights in a room without the balcony and two nights with the balcony and the balcony room is totally amazing. The rooms are basic, neat and clean.

The location is out of the way but it doesn't take that long to get the the main beach. I would say about a 20min walk but it is a lovely walk with great views. However walking up and down hill may not be your thing.
We found it a little hard to get to via public transport for the following reason
a) we didnt speak italian and when asking for help the language barrier was evident
b) we didnt quite understand the instructions
c) our backpack were freaking heavy

There are a restuarants nearby and a grocery store (but it closes at lunch). So you could either eat out or have a lovely meal on the balcony.

We had free wi-fi but sometimes on the room the signal was weak. The internet was always good if you were in the dining / break area

Carlo is such a friendly man. We asked Carlo is we could do some laundry and he let us use one of his washing machine. I would definitly come back to this place again!!

Thanks Carlo!!

Did I mention that the balcony rooms are totally awesome?

The view from our balcony was amazing, Carlo was very accommodating and kind, and his cat was the sweetest creature on the island:) The room was nothing special but don't plan on being in your room when you are in such a beautiful place.

Room Tip: Make sure to ask for a room with a balcony!

We stayed at Pensione Maria Luisa in September 2010 during our trip through Italy and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves!
The pensione is positioned on top of a cliff which overlooks the beautiful sea. We were lucky enough to stay in a sea view room and were mesmerized as soon as we stepped out onto the balcony! Admittedly, the rooms and bathrooms were a little dated, consisting of cane furniture, pink tiles and pink bedspread. Not a deal breaker for us as there were too many other pluses!
Carlo was absolutely fantastic! He was the nicest host we meet in all of Europe! He really made you feel at home and even went to the extend of calling our car company in Rome to let them know we were going to be handing in our car a day earlier. He called, spoke to them in Italian for us and didn't charge us for the inter-state call! You can't fake that! He is a real genuinely lovely person!
Overall, we LOVED Positano and our stay at Pensione Maria Luisa. It was affordable and the views from the balcony were simply magical. We can't wait to return to Positano and have no hesitation in staying at Pensione Maria Luisa again!
