“Perfection!”

Five stars to Stuart. Hil, Casa La Rocca and the Italian countryside as they played host to a wonderful two weeks.
The comfortable apartment provided a sense of home with everything you needed. I've never slept so well...ever! Privacy was paramount yet Stuart and Hil were there to answer all my questions and help with whatever I needed. And let's not forget five stars to Max and Fleury, the two best home-away-from-home dogs!
The charming town of Sulmona with its endless things to see and places to visit, the markets and restaurants were spectacular. Following Stuart's hiking guidebook will allow you to see gorgeous scenery and at the same time an opportunity to walk off all that pasta you'll be eating!
I'm counting the days until my return next year.

“This is the perfect place to base an Abruzzo vacation”

Casa la Rocca is a delightful renovated home just five minutes outside Sulmona. It's got a mature small vineyard, a kitchen garden, hammocks for lounging, and drop-dead views in every direction. When we booked here, our host Hil emailed us that Stu had charted a few hikes that we might be interested in. That was a modest understatement...Stu actually "wrote the book" on walking in Abruzzo, available on Amazon and at the TI in Sulmona, He's working on the Second Edition, to include more walks to the north and south. It's an indispensible guide to walking this beautiful country. In addition, Stu and Hil know the local area thoroughly and were so helpful getting us oriented properly. Their tips made every day more rewarding than just following a map in a guidebook.

Sulmona has a rich history and is easy to walk. The historic center is full of
monuments and beautiful photo opportunities, as well as a number of excellent restaurants. Il Vecchio Muro was our favorite. Their pizza (like many in Italy) is creative and delicious, and they offer a host of traditional dishes that in our opinion were better-made and more varied than in the usual Sulmona favorites (Clemente, Hostaria dell' Arco, Cantina di Biffi). Great wine list too.

The classic hill town of Pettorano sul Gizio is a 5-minute drive or a moderate walk from Casa la Rocca. There are three highly-rated restaurants in the old town and it makes for a delightful evening that's easy to get to after a long day of hiking.

The unit is well-depicted in the photos. Nights are quiet in the valley and we had delightfully restful sleep after our transatlantic flight to Rome. Wildlife abounds in the national parks and occasionally we heard rutting deer calling in the woods on the hillside. The kitchen is thoughtfully appointed and enables simple cooking or a full meal prep (though with the abundance of wonderful eateries in Sulmona it's hard to justify cooking in).

The co-hosts Max and Florie, a couple of sweet farm dogs, sweeten the experience even more. You can see Max in a few of the photos posted for the Casa. They are always happy to greet visitors and their friendliness was the icing on the cake of one of the best vacation experiences we've had. Of course, we would recommend this choice without any hesitation.

“Truly amazing location with everything needed for a perfect holiday.”
Reviewed September 11, 2017 for a stay in September 2017

We loved everything about our week in Casa La Rocca. Not only is it a beautiful house but Stuart the owner was extremely friendly and helpful. He went out of his way to show us some of the sites and advise us of the best places to walk and explore.

We were very impressed with the house and grounds and thoroughly enjoyed our time there. Very comfortable and a lovely place to relax.

We will definitely be back at some stage as we love walking and there are so many beautiful places to explore in the Abruzzo region.

We strongly recommend Casa La Rocca as one of the very best places to stay.

“Relaxing Rural Retreat”
Reviewed July 4, 2017 for a stay in June 2017

We stayed here in 2015 and return this year to continue exploring the mountains in the national parks.

Casa la Rocca is about 30 minutes drive from the autostrada and just 10 minutes drive from Sulmona. The ground floor apartment at the rear of the property is well equipped and has its own terrace with great views up/down the valley and feels very private. Stuart and Hilary make you feel very welcome and are available to discuss and provide advice on the local area if needed. It is a lovely place to return to at the end of the day to a relaxing rural location.

The weather was unusually hot there for this time of year, with temperatures in the mid 30s, so the higher peaks were accessible as the snow had mostly melted. We walked on 7 of the 10 days and tried to explore paths/routes that were new to us - it was a pleasure to explore more of the Majella and Abruzzo regions and still leave some mountain summits and paths to explore. Stuart is currently revising his walking guide and we were lucky to go walking with him on two days, which are memorable highlights for us. Despite trying to avoid the thunderstorms, we did get caught up in a storm deep within the Celano George, but got out OK other than getting a good soaking!

We had a great time here and really enjoyed our stay and definitely will stay here when returning to the area.

“Wonderful location in a peaceful valley beneath spectacular mountain scenery”
Reviewed June 21, 2017 for a stay in June 2017

Great apartment with lovely garden to enjoy the ever changing view of the surrounding mountains. The owner, Stuart, has written a book on walking in Abbruzzio and is therefore the perfect host to ensure you enjoy the spectacular mountains, historic hill top villages and lakeside swimming. The home made wine and fresh veggies from the garden are a great added bonus. Abbruzzio is an unspoilt gem in the heart of Italy and Casa la Rocco is the perfect place to enjoy it.

“So good we came here twice!”
Reviewed August 23, 2016 for a stay in August 2016

Had such a great time last year, we came back again.
Perfect hosts - friendly, laid-back and helpful
Perfect house - peaceful, with amazing views
Perfect location - great for chilling and relaxing, or seeing the many local sights. We particularly enjoyed Pettorano, Sulmona, Rocca Calascio and Campo Imperatore.

Thanks (again).
