“Middle of Nowhere”
Reviewed 26 March 2007

Firstly I would say this is not a 4 or even 3 star hotel. The external state of the bungalows, the state of the footpaths and the beach access would barely rate 2 star. The best you could say about the food is that it was acceptable 2star. no puddings on most days. The entertainment room was cold and heated by two patio heaters and a 50 metre walk to the bar for any drinks - you got wet if it was raining. No shop, no postcards, no stamps and only one phone in the office. The nearest supermarket about 2 miles away. The pool was not ready for use, there was no archery and the Health & Beauty Centre was non-existent. Complaints to the managers were a waste of time as the whole site is not ready to accept guests and certainly would not meet Billy Butlins minimum standards. Of the 28 British who were there at the same time, you would not find one who was happy to be there.

  • Liked — The rooms wre reasonably comfortable
  • Disliked — No entertainment or lounge area in bad weather.

We got a really good newpaper deal for this holiday. We did a little research on the area and knew that it was the first year that British tourists had ventured that far south in Italy for a holiday. So, we went with an open mind and looking forward to the Italian experience. Well we certainly think we got that. Rooms are very basic but clean. I though we had a basic room but it was actually standard which I was glad about where other people told us about their basic rooms. There are good and bad points:

Good:
- Excellant food all local and regional - I'm vegetarian and although options were very repetitive, there was plenty of fresh vegetables and salds, pasta and risotto.
- free wine with lunch and dinner
- lovely region lots to explore
- lovely beach
- nice pool area
- friendly staff expecially if you make an effort to speak a little Italian if even if it's just hello or thank you in italian.
- wrist bands that you top up with money which you use to pay for things at the bar, saves carrying cash with you.
- Local town of Tropea is beautiful with lovely shops, resturants, bars, views and beach.
- large round tables of 8 in the restaurant which means that everyone sits with eachother which means you get to chat to other people.

Negative:
- Quite an isolated resort, have to travel everywhere by taxi
- not geared up for tourists of other nationalities all signs and entertainment in Italian and you get the impression that staff would prefer only Italians in the hotel
- bar ran out of beer
- no shop or beauty salon as advertised
- quite a tired resort, needs a revamp

The region is know for storms and floods. There was a thunder storm the day before we arrived which threw out the computer system so we were unable to get our wrist bands and there for unable to buy a drink. Also, meant a leaky roof in the dining room. The staff didn't tell us about the welcome meeting either but we found out about it the next day - a Dutch lady called Dorothy is a tour guide who arranges trip around the region and she is worth chatting to.

I would recommend this resort if you want to experience all things Italian, if you want a relaxing holiday or if you want to explore a beautiful area - but don't expect luxury.

I wouldn't recommend it if you want lively nightlife (unless you are prepared for travelling a distance) or if you want a home from home.

We wouldn't go back to this hotel but we would try out another Arum hotel.

Very dissapointed with the hotel Sabbie Bianche. We were sold it out of a national newspaper in the U.K. as a 4 star hotel, only to find it was just scratching a 2 star hotel. The food was O.K. but very repetative you had to be quick at meal times or the best food was gone. There was nowhere to sit in the evening if it was raining. The only shelter was nothing more than a bus shelter, containing seats that were so dilapated they had nails sticking out everywhere. When a group of us complained we were told by staff to go to bed at 9pm. We were 8 adults who had gone there for a relaxing break. The pool area was not swept in the 2 weeks we were there. There was broken glass at the pool side when we arrived and was still there when we left. The rooms were clean but the sheets were not changed after 7 days, until we stripped the bed ourselves and left the sheets on the floor. Overall the hotel grounds were unkept with rubbish and debris left around the place. The beach was nice but huge rocks made it difficult to get into the sea. Our only saviour was Dominique who was a driver at the hotel, and for a small fee ferried us around the Calabria region.

  • Liked — Nothing

After reading a report on the hotel a couple of days before we flew to Calabria we were a bit apprehensive as there seemed to be more negatives than positive views about the hotel. Although the hotel needs some updating and most of the sports facilities were not operating, because of the time of year, we made the most of our stay. The food was excellent, very Italian, water and wine flowed freely and because of the large round tables in the dining room, everyone talked to each other - we have never been on a holiday where everyone was so friendly, couples and families of all ages, just had a great time with each other!
We had a bit of a grumble with the entertainment as everything was for the Italian guests and it was very difficult for the Brits to be involved. After a few of us had a word with the entertainment staff, the very next night they got all of us to join in and we had a great time!
It would probably help if there were a few more signs and information in English to help the British guests, especially as Aurum seem to want to attract us to book our holidays there e.g. by advertising in the daily papers.
The bungalows, although basic, were cleaned each day and the beds are comfortable -the towels were changed daily .
All the staff were very friendly and helpful and we were able to organise a couple of trips out of the resort.
We had very good weather for most of our week there although it did rain on our last evening and when it rains there is very little to do- entertainment is basically outdoors so obviously everyone tries to get under cover - it would be nice if there was somewhere to sit indoors if the weather is bad e.g. a bar /lounge.
Sabbie Bianche is in a fantastic position by the beach, although fairly isolated. We were able to walk everyday but walks are limited. The hill down to the resort is very steep so may be unsuitable for anyone who is not so fit or unable to walk up or down hill!
Overall, for what we paid for the holdiay, it was fantastic value for money and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there!

  • Liked — The position of the bungalow- overlooking a lemon grove!
  • Disliked — It was a bit dark in the room!
  • Tips/Secrets — Take a travel kettle/cups for the room. Plug-in/candles/insect repellant/germolene for insect bites!

We recently stayed at the Sabbie Bianchie. Had not heard or read any reports beforehand. We went with a open mind and had a great time! We met lovely people of all ages and races Scots, English, Italian and Australian. Our room was clean and tidy we appeared to be in the most basic accomadation but this was cleaned daily and as others have said no probs with the ants. Mossies a prob but we forgot our sprays etc but reception as with everything more than ready to help. Trips to Tropea easy to organise and well worth a trip or two. Staff friendly and helpfull! Language can be seen as a barrier or a bit of fun! We made the most of our hol and would actually go back to the village we had a small child with us and he had a whale of a time. Food varied and of a high standard plenty of choice and a taste of Calabria. Ease into your holiday relax and enjoy it is what you make of it! Price wise for what we paid could not get a weekend away in Britian for that. Planning to go to another Aurum holtel in the near future as other guests had nothing but good reports.
