“Don't miss the cistern”
Review of Parco Archeologico

Parco Archeologico
Reviewed August 6, 2018

A relatively small but beautifully located archeological park. Just outside the gate is a Roman cistern, also worth the visit. We bought a Volterra Card here that is valid for 72 hours and besisdes this archeological park gives entrance to the Etruscan museum, the Roman theatre and one or two other things.

Whilst the park is pleasant enough to stroll round (and free to enter), it's a short but steep climb to get up there, and not especially worth the effort. The views are surprisingly limited considering it's the highest point in town. You can't see any of the surrounding countryside and only the uppermost parts of the buildings in Piazza dei Priori. There might be better views from within the actual archiological park section but as it looked like there wasn't much to see for the entrance fee we didn't go in there.

... be an expert in Etruscan necropolis structures. There isn’t much to contextualize the site and there isn’t anyone around other than the ticket taker to answer questions. The best part of the complex is the Roman cictern. It is wholly untouched and completely in tact. I would definitely recommend this site if you have a strong interest in antiquities. It is not reccommended for the casual tourist or people with small children. It is not kid-friendly in that there isn’t much to distract.

Having walked up (not actually that far but uneven so you need decent shoes) we went in as we’d got the multi-pass. The ruins are overrun with weeds and so nigh on impossible to picture what it would have been like. There are two boards with a sort of quasi badly translated english explanation.

Everything says they close at 17:30 but they were already closed at 17:15 after we walked all the way up there. We were able to look through the fence at the sites. The view from the top looks like it could have been amazing if we could have been let in to see it.
