Dominating the skyline of the city, this imposing medieval fortress consists of two castles. The older one was completed in the late 13th century and the second castle was built in the 14th century. It is not open to public, but you can admire its magnificent exterior from the park beneath it.

The imposing Medici Fortress is visible from miles away and characterises the skyline of Volterra.
The Fortress was built in the 15th century primarily to keep the city under tight control and to prevent revolts against the Fiorentines.
The most Eastern part of the fortress, the Cassero Castle, already extisted.
The two fortresses are linked by a stone “curtain wall”. The fortress is used currently as a maximum security prison and tourist visits to the interior are restricted to a few days and a small portion of the buildings.
A notable exception is that part used as a restaurant operated by appropriately supervised prisoners.

This is a very impressive structure and it's incredible to think that one family had the wherewithal to build it! The scale is very impressive as is the architectural and engineering aspects of the fortress. Too bad part of it was turned into a prison as it would have been interesting to view the entire fortress. As it is most of the structure is only viewable from the outside.

This is a stand out building in Volterra. Great views from the South end of town and from the bell tower in the piazza. This is still a modern day prison. We saw on 60 minutes, TV show, they now host about 8 dinners once a year for locals cooked and served by the inmates.

Its a beautiful palace which has been turned into a State Jail. We were told that only the tower is accessible to the public on specific days. We could not get more details. Worth walking around it and checking it out

View from the fortress is worth the walk up the hill. The inner courtyard is filled with olive trees, wisteria clings to the rock walls, and from the top of the fortress and can see for miles in every direction, across the Tuscan hills and valleys. Be prepared to climb stone stairs.

A beautiful old fortress from the outside that dominates the whole end of Volterra. Don't try to enter though because it may be 3-5 years before you get out. The fortress is now a state prison which is kind of disappointing because I would have liked to see the inside.

Still in use as a prison so you cannot get close to even the exterior walls best seen from the south side or an aerial view on a postcard.

We had thought to visit the fortress long with the Roman theatre and the Etruscan site. However, the ticket seller inside the archeological park soon put us right - the fortress is now a prison! Very impressive to drive by, the walls probably look even taller from the inside ;-)
