“Heaven on earth”
Reviewed 5 August 2006

I have travelled around the world and finally i found heaven.
Lovely hotel at the end of the road in the middle of nowhere.
Nice walks around the pond.
Our room was lovely( 145 euros ),can not understand other reviews, perhaps they chose the cheapest one.
Fantastic gourmet-dinner,to be remebered forever.
If you want to relax and forget about the rest of the world-come to the watermill, but with your own car

La Roche l'Abeille, south of Limoges, hardly qualifies as a village; it's more of a hamlet with a few scattered houses and this restaurant avec chambres, an affiliate of Relais & Chateaux for many years. It sits beside a large pond (or small lake) and looks delightful, the drizzle of our visit making a scene like a watery impressionist painting. The original building has been added to over the years and now it sprawls randomly and gently, from room to room, with two dining rooms, one rustic the other more chintzy country house. There is also a lovely terrace but that drizzle put paid to ideas of kir royales outside.

All the rooms are named after birds - ours was Trois Oiseaux which was certainly large but overly stuffed with furniture. It was solid, comfy, old-fashioned and acceptable. The bathroom, though, was unacceptable - the bath was quite the narrowest I have ever encountered, making showering rather difficult and bathing quite impossible, and I only weigh 11 stone! The tiling was lilac with flowers - the sort of decor that puts off potential house-buyers. The plumbing gurgled and creaked. You'd have thought that the owners might have looked at this awful bathroom and said, no, that isn't acceptable anymore and spent a little money on a new one.

But this gripe aside, we still liked the place and the one-star Michelin food was just what we needed after a longish non-stop drive down from Calais. We chose the Menu Degustation with specially chosen wines and thought the whole thing well balanced, well-paced and worth the 238 Euros for two. Breakfast the next morning was up to the expected standard.

The Dordogne area is a scenic hour or two's drive south from here. On the way we called in at the spectacular Hautefort Castle - essential viewing if you like intricate formal gardens.
