I had dinner on October 7th at La Fourchette des Ducs in Obernai. This lovely restaurant in a classical Alsacian mansion with a history dating back to 1921 is located near the historic center next to the train station. Run by chef Nicolas Stamm and Serge Schaal, it has two stars in the Michelin guide and is part of the select Tables du Monde.
The restaurant has two dining rooms, the cosy winter room with wood paneling and apparent wooden beams, and the summer room that opens on the interior courtyard terrasse. I was first to arrive and was seated in the somewhat dark but intimate winter room, and immediately got full attention from the well trained staff. I was offered a choice of several champagnes for welcome drink. Various mise-en-bouches quickly appeared.
I chose the Libre Emotion menu at 150 euros. It was truly splendid, exquisite dishes prepared with care and artistically presented. First carpaccio of scallops with passion vinaigrette and Granny Smith apples. Then back of sandre with wild mushrooms, a bed of a succulent alsacian choucroute perfumed with cumin (probably the best choucroute I ever tasted) and frog legs, then variations of lamb from Limousin with thyme juice and mashed dates with ginger. I found the cheese course absolutely stunning: an emulsion of white Munster with cumin with a creamy polenta and truffle, decorated with gold speckles. The planned dessert contained hazelnut so I got an equally yummy substitution , my allergy to nuts having been carefully noted. The accompanying wines by the glass suggested by the sommelier were excellent matches. Service was courteous and attentive.
All in all a true gastronomic experience, I will definitely come back since I attend a meeting every year in October in nearby Mont Ste Odile.
