“Great stay in a beautiful hotel”
Reviewed 2 January 2012

My husband and I spent my birthday in one of the suites at this Chateau. It was overlooking the lake and was beautiful. The service was good and we had a lovely french dinner. Breakfast was served in our room and it was lovely. I would recommend this hotel and we had a really good stay here!

We have choosen Hotel Brindos as our hub to visit the Basque region in France and Northern Spain. The location of Brindos Hotel is impressive, overlooking a beutifull lake and forest. The hotel building itself is also very nice, with the old building being carefully refurbished while a newer wing extending the old building has been added later on. As such, the accomodation facility is nice, probably one of the best in the region.

Unfortunately, the service proves lack of management and attention for clients. The reception personnel is very mixed (some nice, some very far from what someone expects from a 4-5 stars hotel). The service at breakfast is lousy, no one attendig the clients. I had to search around for waiters when asking a coffee, or to wait 10'-15' for someone to clean up the table although the restaurant was not busy at all. I thought initially that it was may be a bad day, an unfortunate exception to the good service that I expected. But then I realized that each day which was passing was the same.

We also tried the lunch and dinner at the hotel but were unimpressed with the food and again the service, which was very slow and impersonal. Better try the gourmet restaurants in Anglet and Biaritz (there are 3 or 4 serving excellent food).

So, my suggestion to the owners of Brindos Hotel is take a closer look to the management and personnel if they want their hotel remain in the top league of Biaritz hotels.

We just returned from our wonderful 3 week trip to Europe, and our FAVORITE HOTEL was our 4 night stay at Chateau de Brindos! After a 5 hour drive from Madrid our 2 kids (age 15 and 12) and my husband and I, were exhausted. We were greeted by the most welcoming staff who checked us in in seconds, told us to leave the car out front and that they would take care of the luggage and parking. We were taken to our 2 large rooms that connected, and found a welcoming bottle of champagne and treats. It was very "french" and we felt like we were guests in someone's beautiful home. We dined in the hotel restaurant our first evening... It was absolutely gourmet on every level. We ordered the 5 course dinner prepared by Chef Christophe ... Tres magnifique! The Director of the property, Arnaud Sehebiade, is lively, welcoming and has a great sense of humor! He stopped by our table and realizing that we were American he sent over the new sous chef, who is from California, to go over the menu and answer any questions. He found out that we were from Maryland and specially prepared a mini crab cake for each of us to sample... How nice is that?! Our vote is that it should be added to the menu...it was delicious! The hotel is located in close proximity to the beaches of Anglet and Biarritz, and we also visited Bayonne which is a lovely town to walk around. The nice thing is that rather staying in a hotel in these towns where is it more touristy and congested, we were always excited to return to our beautiful chateau which has an amazingly rich and colorful history. We have stayed in many Relais Chateau properties, and tend to prefer very high end places to stay, and we were so very happy with our choice to stay at Chateau de Brindos. On a side note, the bathrooms are very large, the beds are very comfortable and we felt as though they did everything they could to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. One night we returned home to a large bowl of fresh fruit (nectarines, apricots, strawberries etc..). Our rooms (25 &26) had lovely balconies that overlooked the lake and the swimming pool. Our kids also loved the hotel, and we were so pleased that they had a real authentic french experience as opposed to a chain hotel of somesort. After leaving we headed back to Spain where I discovered that I had left 2 jackets in my closet. The staff did everything possible and communicated with me extensively about finding them and returning them. Luckily they found them, and are now in the process of mailing them to me in the US...Amazing customer service! We will 100% return to this very lovely, and beautiful hotel!

Room Tip: Stay at Chateau de Brindos for a beautiful and authentic french experience!

Our wedding reception at the Chateau de Brindos was simply amazing!

Everything was perfect from start to finish.

The rooms have beautiful views of the lake and gardens.

The staff are extremely polite and helpful.

The food is excellent (great presentation).

Thank you for a brilliant weekend!

You may enjoy this great location but you'll be disappointed by the gap between 5stars and reality. Based on my experience, it should worth around €100 to €125 maximum ; paying more may be very deceiving. Relais & Chateau standards are loosing on a very dynamic & ambitious hospitality market.

(+):
Great location (close to airport, but silent)
Beautiful surroundings & nice view
Spacious rooms
Catering aiming for a one star rating
(-):
Weak service while some staff of good composition, arrogant communication of local manager and changing conditions for extra services (beware of massage that have to take place in room with moving target fees, to be paid in cash in the room or in cash at the reception and extra "approach fee" never anywhere before...)
Worst part ever: beds are just from another age and suffered 90's standards. I hope the owner will figure out that this is not acceptable at all.
Beware that you don't attend a period where another event would take away any lounge facility... you may be bothered getting a shrinking version of available hotel space

Room Tip: As for a view on the pounf.

During a recent stay near Biarritz, my boyfriend surprised me with one night at Chateau Brindos as a birthday present. We arrived, had our bags taken up to the room and felt chilled very quickly. We had a room that was in the old part of the Chateau (there is a new block as an extension which didn't look as nice) with a gorgeous balcony and view over the lake. We took a walk around the private lake which, although slightly overgrown, was really relaxing. We then had a drink on the jetty (having had to find a waiter who brought us our drinks) and watched the ducks and fish whilst finishing off our drinks. A quick swim in the clean pool and we got ready for dinner. It was probably one of the best meals I've had in a hotel - the table was outside overlooking the lake, the sommelier helped chose our wine, the menu was fantastic and it came with all the extras that make it special (amuse bouche, hors d'oeuvres, petit four etc). After dinner, the room was comfy and we had a great nights sleep.
Breakfast was varied and plentiful - served overlooking the lake - and the only complaint I have was the duck and chicks who came round the tables begging for bread!
After breakfast we used the gym facilities - they are quite limited (a treadmill, bike, rowing machine as well as some free weights) but the gym is clean - and then had a sauna and hammam.
Overall I loved it here and would definitely come back - from reading the other reviews it does seem dependant on if there's a conference or not, so we were lucky, but if you can enquire when booking then you should be guaranteed a quiet, intimate and relaxing time.

Our family spent two nights at the Chateau de Brindos that was the low point of an otherwise wonderful trip to the Basque region of France and Spain.

We made our reservations through Booking.Com and were notified that the restaurant on the property would be closed for the first full night of our stay. We were not told the reason. A French yogurt company was having a corporate event all day. We were awakened by trucks and furniture movers at 6 AM. The noise went on all morning. It was replaced by 150 obnoxious partiers yelling into cellphones and blowing vuvuzelas (those horrible horns from the world cup) right under our window. So much for our relaxing stay. There was no escape at the hotel so we retreated into Biarritz for the day and evening.

Upon my return, I sent a letter to Relais & Chateaux to register my complaint. It was passed on to the hotel management. What i got in return was the most DISMISSIVE and UNCARING response that one could imagine. They never addressed my major concerns and told me it was too bad we didn't try their restaurant since the unruly hordes were gone by 5. Not one sincere word of apology. They did suggest we try again the next time we're in the area. FAT CHANCE.

There are many wonderful places to stay in and around Biarritz. This isn't one of them
