“Restaurant very poor”
Reviewed 23 January 2012

We went to this hotel's restaurant for a romantic dinner. It was rather cosy although the lightening was so dim, we couldn't read the menu. Our starter (soup) was fine, nothing special. The main course, scallops was not edible. There was so much salt that we couldn't eat more than 2 bites. The scallops had a very strong fishy taste. When we told the waiter, he didn't seemed bothered though he indicated that he would inform the chef. He didn't seem surprised when we didn't order dessert or coffee, just the bill. No effort and no apology was made to compensate for the fact that we hadn't eaten our dinner. Overall disappointing.

It is worthwhile getting back from the sea vicinity in Arcachon to this hotel in the late nineteenth century slightly art nouveau creation of the quartier Ville d'Hiver. The hotel has been running for nearly three years. Originally it was the water company pumphouse to which genial owners and an architect added restoration and new outhouses for rooms in the peculiar seaside resort style (late 19th) of the place. The rooms are delightful, spacious and comfortable. The restaurant merits the obvious attention that local Arcachonais are obviously (we were there in early November, out of season) giving it - systematically full! The acceuil and service were competent relaxed and agreabale.

Room Tip: Third floor in annexes

This is an usual place - very new, well decorated with quality furnishings throughout. The bed was very comfortable and our room (like all of them?) had a lovely balcony with 2 chairs on it. Staff were professional and friendly. A few odd things though for a hotel of this quality - no in-room tea and coffee making facilities, no minibar (although a 1 litre bottle of still water was provided free of charge) and - most serious of all - no small bottles of products were provided in the bathroom. Instead there were 2 permanent, generic dispensers - one by the bath/shower and the other by the wash basin - very much what you would expect in a much lower grade hotel in the UK. Needless to say, as we didn't know what we were getting, we used the shampoo and conditioner we brought with us.
We stayed out of season and the pool was not open, so cannot comment on this, nor on breakfast which we did not have. What is well worth mentioning is that even on what should be a quiet day (a Monday evening in April), the main restaurant filled up very quickly -and not just with hotel guests - , so I'd strongly recommend making a reservation. The quality of the food is very high and the prices are surprisingly reasonable. Even if you can't get into the hotel - definitely try to eat here!.

We stayed at a topfloor room for 2 nights and I totally agree with the the review saying that guests seem to be a major disturbance for the owners. We already had difficulties with our booking - when I called a few days before our arrival to ask about some detail the receptionist was quite rude asking me if I was quite sure I called the right hotel because she did not have a reservation in our name. Luckily I could tell her the exact dates of our email contacts so she finally had to admit that it was not our fault- yet we wound up getting the most expensive room because she did not have the groundfloor room that we originally wanted. The indifference in service then continued once we arrived. No towels by the pool and no one at the reception to ask for them so after 10 min of standing around at the front desk I asked some of the waiting staff who told me he would see about it. Never happened so I left the pool after 30 min of waiting. Service at dinner was hectic, combined with the fact that french restaurants tend to pack tables elbow to elbow did not contribute to a nice romantic dinner (although the food was fantastic). The rooms are beautifully appointed with great bedding, but be aware that bathrooms with tub have no seperate shower. You shower over the tub and there is no partition so it´s waterworks allover! The grounds between the house are kept very rustic which is a pity because it could make a lovely garden. We stayed at 5 hotels during our trip. Considering that this one was the most expensive (230€/night bb), yet without any true feeling of being welcome as guest we would not recommend it.

Excellent rooms, ground floor quite dark as partly underground. Food very good for the price. Friendly staff although not many of them, had to wait a little for service sometimes.
Pool area very different, great for a few hours r&r. Hotel located at top of hill from town, but short walk to lift into town, great for way back!
Overall a very stylish place well worth the money.
