This museum really gives the visitor a sense of France's recent past covering many important categories of life: education, food, employment, child rearing, religion. A visit teaches one as much about France's present as it does its recent past. Go and enjoy.

This contains recreations of 15 or so shops and businesses from the early 1900's and is set out over 3 floors of an old industrial building in the centre of Rochefort. The descriptions on te exhibits are in English as well as French, and there is also a very good audio guide. It is a great place to spend an hour or so, and would be suitable for all ages.

Visited for the second time (after a few years!) as it is the perfect place to take anyone who is "getting on in years" and looking for a bit of nostalgia. My mother (Alzheimers) loved it. It is much better now they have installed a lift and translated notices into English. As with most sites in France it closes for lunch so check times before you go.
A great way to spend a couple of hours in Rochefort, especially when it's raining!

We arrived at 11.30 on the dot to be told by the pleasant young man not to bother going in as he closed at 12.00 and it would take an hour and a half to go through. So if you arrive in the morning I guess your window of opportunity for seeing it is between 10 and 10.30. Amazing how often one forgets the first law of tourism in France that when you want to see something there's every chance it will be closed. Apparently this place is open to 7.00pm so I guess the answer is to go in the afternoon - not possible for us as we were driving through to parts beyond,

We got the train down from La Rochelle especially to visit this museum, well worth the visit. Exceptional little place in a fascinating building 10 minutes stroll from the train station. Cheap to get in, really friendly staff and the audio guide was great. Really highly recommend.
