This extraordinary Cathedral is worthy of a visit just for its history having been heavily damaged during the Wars of Religion, rebuilt several times and it contains the scars of this. It has a vast expanse of space and interesting remains of frescos...music plays gently in the background and this is an excellent place to walk, think and be.

Wonderful cathedral, oozes history; worth a detour. Fine example of Romanesque architecture. The sheer size of the place is impressive and awe-inspiring.

Made two teenage girls fall silent in awe! Something to be said for the incredible interior and its peaceful and calm atmosphere. There are several miniature chapels along one side along with beautiful stain glass windows, a really beautiful building and a definite must-see if you are in Saintes.

We enjoyed visiting this cathedral. Interesting to read about which parts of the cathedral were built when and why. Some unusual architectural elements. In the heart of the older section of town, which is lovely for strolling around.

According to the timeline on display there's been one form of church/cathedral on this site since around 525AD (if I recall correctly). It was destroyed during the times of religious reformation/persecution and rebuilt with the patronage of wealthy town inhabitants - so it's all a bit of a mish mash. That having said there's interesting architecture both inside and out (particularly above the entrance). Information panels around the walls are mainly in French with a small paragraph at the bottom in English so you get an idea of the history. Whilst visiting, we were treated to organ practise which was a joy to listen and appreciate the acoustics. There are numerous side chapels dedicated to various saints and causes. It's worth taking time to appreciate the numerous stain glass windows.
