We first visited the Chalet Chez Pépé Nicolas ten years ago and from the outside, with its mountain vistas and slate-roofed chalets, the place is still as authentic and memorable as ever. However, nothing prepared us for the gourmet lunch we decided to treat ourselves to...expecting to select from a menu offering things like a hearty goat cheese salad we discovered instead a gastronomic menu that absolutely blew us away. The meal was one of the most imaginative and innovative we'd had in years (and we live in France full-time!) and every single one of the dishes the four of us ordered was flawless. The pace of our leisurely gourmet lunch allowed us to finish our meal just as the clanging of hundreds of "cow" bells drifted our way--signaling the imminent arrival of the Chalet's goats, done after a day's munching atop a neighboring mountain. Within minutes, we were surrounded by dozens of good-natured goats of every age and color imaginable. This was our real reason for heading back here a second time--to enjoy this moment with the animals amidst a spectacular setting. I cannot recommend the Chalet Chez Pépé Nicolas enough--if you're in the area, the place is a must!
