“Great display of design furniture, best place to buy suvenirs”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 June 2011

I visited it twice, once in 2006 and last year, i enjoyed it both times.
It's great for architecture or design students( as myself) furniture is very modern and space beautifully decorated. I went with friends that study something else and they enjoyed it also.
I really loved the gift shop, best place to buy suvenirs that are stylish, cute and not expensive.
Intresting buildings of famous architects such as Tadao Ando, Frank Ghery, Zaha Hadid and the main building Herzog and Demeuron.
The main building has no entrance fee, inside you find the furniture and gift shop, you have to pay to enter the other buildings wich usualy have temporary exibitions.

“The whole family thoroughly enjoyed the Vitra Haus and the Museum”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 June 2011

the Haus is a new concept, where, with a creditcard style plastic you wander thorugh 6 hauses and see the furniture applied to a true inhouse setting.

its quite innovative, has a great shop for little design stuff and a coffeeshop of stylish cakes.

super excursion!!

“IKEA deluxe. Overrated.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 May 2011

I am a fan of Vitra and design in general, but I thought the whole concept of the Vitra design was like a deluxe furniture shop. A cool one, but still a shop. Any other brand could do something as attractive if they also afford themselves a couple of star architects to design their several buildings. If you are looking for something cool and entertaining then this is fine. If you are looking for a fine design museum, then go to the Triennale Design Museum in Milan.

“wonderful collection of great buildings and products”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 November 2010

If you are on a trip to Basel don't miss up the chance to visit the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein/Germany. There you can enjoy the great buildings designed by renowned architects as well as all the collection of vitra products. The industrial complex it's just as far as ca. 20 minutes from the centre of Basel (you can reach the place by car or public transportation, from Claraplatz with the bus number 55). The guided tour is gorgeous. Our guide was a very educated person who told us mostly everything about the buildings and the history of Vitra. There are daily guided tours, twice a day. The new Vitra Haus (by the Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron) is just a must see!

“Unique architecture and design museum”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 November 2010

In 1981, Vitra, a manufacturer of high end furniture for the office and home lost a substantial portion of their factory complex in Weil to fire. They engaged Nicholas Grimshaw to build the first replacement building. They then decided to approach 'A' list architects and proceed building by building in the future. This has resulted in a 'campus' at Weil which contains examples from Grimshaw, Frank Gehry, Tadao Ando, Herzog/de Meuron, Zaha Hadid, Alvaro Siza, Jasper Morrison and SANAA. They have also 'collected' and moved to the Campus small examples from Buckminster Fuller and Jean Prouve. Docent led tours of the buildings are available daily. The docents are architecturally knowledgeable and multilingual. For lovers of design and architecture, this is a must see.
