I'd say worth a trip even if in Munich. Freising is nice quiet town just north of Munich and visiting the worlds oldest brewery was a must for me. Great beer with nice selection of wheat beers, bock and pils. Beer garden: order at the counter (20 euro minimum for credit card), some typical beer garden food options (cheese spread, pretzels, others). I would highly recommend eating in the restaurant after enjoying a beer outside. The services was great (especially since my German is terrible). Being in a university town, most staff speak very good English. See separate review for dinner. Braustuberl Weihenstephan

TripAdvisor recommended this brewery, so I decided to take a day trip from Munich on a Friday to visit it. What TripAdvisor didn't state (as far as I can find), is that brewery tours are not run every day! As a result I wasted a morning (and money) on the train from Munich to Freising and back. BE SURE TO CHECK BEFORE YOU HEAD THERE.

Phenomenal beer, great food, generous portions, very kind service. Went in February, and would definitely like to return once the beer garden is open. We enjoyed pumpkin soup, wurst salad, and pretzel-crusted schnitzel.

tiny complaint - Very strong, pungent fresh lilies in the lobby. Their aroma was truly overpowering upon entering the restaurant. A very unharmonious smell to be hit with prior to enjoying German food/beer.

We tried to walk from the town centre based on the city map (from the Tourist Office) and it's not easy, especially from Vottinger Str. onwards.

Thankfully there was a university so we could ask a few students for directions.

The beer is good but the experience was marred by the long journey.

It would have been better if there are signages to guide tourists.

The Weihenstephan Brewery offers tours and has a beer garden, restaurant, and pub. All of these are nice experiences for trying out some excellent beers. I made this part of a nice loop hike around the town of Freising. The hike was about 6 or 7 miles and went along rivers, through woods, through farm fields, and through formal gardens -- a great way to work up a thirst. Also stopped at a forest beer garden along the hike called Plantage which also serves Weihenstephan beers.
