After three previous visits to Cochem , staying in town centre hotels, we decided to look at accomodation somewhere slightly out of the town. Apart from being slightly more reasonably priced we were looking for somewhere a little quieter.
On arrival we were greeted by the owner who looked a little distressed since there were major roadworks right outside his door and they had just dug up a power cable plunging the hotel into darkness!!. We had booked a room with a balcony overlooking the road and the river but we were offered a room at the rear of the hotel which was quieter if we preferred. we opted for the river view and possible noise. As it turned out the noise was minimal, the view was stunning and we spent every possible evening that week just soaking up the sunshine, lovely views, even watching the workmen creating a new junction outside the hotel. The view from the balcony is priceless, you are looking at the opposite side of the river with only road and vineyards, no buildings. The room was spotlessly clean, well laid out and furnished, no huge but big enough, bathroom was modern, shower only, possibly sightly cramped if you are larger than average, also spotless.
Breakfast was superb, The couple who own the hotel and the small group of staff had no end of energy and enthusiasm, a quality which we found lacking in larger establishments in the area. the hotel also houses a Mexican style restaurant which I was apprehensive about initially but it was also spotlessly clean, food was excellent, (owners wife ran the kitchen), and did a good trade with the locals which is always a good sign.
The best place we have stayed in a long time.

Room Tip: River view is a must, try for room 3, best view.

We dropped down to the Moselle on Route 259, & there was Stumbergers, right on the junction. Mine host welcomed us warmly for our 3-night stay, & we were given one of the rooms with a balcony & river view. Breakfast was excellent, with a good selection of cereals, meats, breads, cheeses & a choice of egg dish. There's a beer-garden across the car-park where we laid the dust once or twice. The hotel staff were friendly & efficient. Our booking was easily made via Booking.com. It worked out to £85.83 per night (98Euro) for our double room/B&B, which we thought fair enough.
Our room was nice & clean, although the bathroom was fairly small. It had been updated & all worked well. The road outside is fairly busy, but we weren't greatly disturbed by traffic noise. I spent a little time out on the balcony, alternately reading my Steig Larsson novel & watching the world go by.
Cochem town centre is 1 km away from Stumbergers, & is a tourist centre, so can be quite crowded at times. It proved a pleasant stroll along the promenade. Cochem river front is where one gets tickets for river cruises, & we took one a few km upriver to Beilstein, a pretty village on a hillside. There was time for a little exploration & some lunch before the return trip. Late August is when the villages along the Moselle have their wine festivals, in celebration of a safe harvest, so you could go to a different knees-up each day, if you wanted!
We travelled about 2 km upriver to another hotel in the village of Ernst for our evening meal a couple of times. Not that there was anything wrong with Stumbergers, but staying 3 nights & eating there 3 times seemed a bit confining. What I'm saying is that there's plenty of variety not far away. We bought a few bottles of locally-produced wine, which proved excellent. We recommend that people try the red wine, because you certainly don't see a lot of it in England.
We arranged to come back to Stumbergers on our way home from Switzerland, & when we had to ask them if we could put our nightstop back 24 hrs they were most obliging. We were pleased to see a friendly face after the trauma of our car-crash!
If Cochem is on our itinerary in future, we'll be booking into Stumbergers again.

This hotel is situated about 10 to 15 minutes walk outside of Cochem main town, which we thought was a good thing as it was quieter. There is not much to do in the vicinity of the hotel and there are few facilities in the immediate area. It is sited on a main road, we had a balcony room overlooking the Mosel. The road is busy during the day but goes quiet at night time. The pillows in the rooms are awful, way too soft, even with three pillows you can still feel your hand between your head and the pillows. The place is entirely closed on Tuesdays, so phone up in advance if you need to check in they will give you a code for a digi-box to access your room key. The hosts are lovely and make you very welcome. There is ample parking and a nice restaurant and bar.

Hotel is location overlooking the Moselle River, amidst the wine growing area. Barges & cruise boats move along the river. Hotel is on edge of Cochem, with local bus service at hand. Hotel and staff are very good, rooms with balcony are a great benefit. Breakfast meal is exceptional and more than expected. Lovely town, lots of sights and a"Must" to go on one of the boat cruises. I would use the hotel again.

We liked this hotel very much. The room was Eurosmall but it was very clean, comfortable and recently redone.

Our host had quite good English and was in attendance morning and night.

The bathroom was small. Standing in the door you faced the mirror and sink which separated the shower on one side and the stool on the other.

No AC here.

The food in the restaurant was very good. This was our first day in Germany after several in France and we were looking forward to enjoying German food again, after many years. Surprise---the hotel restaurant was fully decorated in a Mexican motif and had a full Mexican menu except for about 5 to 6 German dishes. We were both pleased with our German dinners here as well as with breakfast the next morning.

Too bad we were on a schedule and only had one night to spend here.

My girlfriend and I stayed at Stumbergers for 3 nights in August and we really enjoyed it. The rooms were clean and spacious and the the patio was a big plus. From the patio, we had great views of the the river and the Castle. I loved sitting out on the patio at night viewing the castle all lit up. Breakfast was excellent and they gave us the option of having our egg scrambled instead of the usual hard boiled (which was actually refreshing). Most importantly, the staff was professional, friendly and helpful. They really went out of there way to make our stay enjoyable.

If there was any negative, it may be the location of the hotel... but this may be because we traveled by train. The hotel is a little outside the city in Sehl... Sehl itself is really pleasant, with a nice bakery and a great grocery store, and even though it is an ok distance to walk to and from Cochem, the train station it was a little too far (especially lugging bags). If you do come by train, I would advise taking a taxi (about 7 euros). The hotel was also right off the main road so there is some traffic noise at night.

All in all, we would definately return to Stumbergers.

But the way, The beer garden was great as it was nice to relax at after a day of sight seeing! and there is free wifi!
