After three previous visits to Cochem , staying in town centre hotels, we decided to look at accomodation somewhere slightly out of the town. Apart from being slightly more reasonably priced we were looking for somewhere a little quieter.
On arrival we were greeted by the owner who looked a little distressed since there were major roadworks right outside his door and they had just dug up a power cable plunging the hotel into darkness!!. We had booked a room with a balcony overlooking the road and the river but we were offered a room at the rear of the hotel which was quieter if we preferred. we opted for the river view and possible noise. As it turned out the noise was minimal, the view was stunning and we spent every possible evening that week just soaking up the sunshine, lovely views, even watching the workmen creating a new junction outside the hotel. The view from the balcony is priceless, you are looking at the opposite side of the river with only road and vineyards, no buildings. The room was spotlessly clean, well laid out and furnished, no huge but big enough, bathroom was modern, shower only, possibly sightly cramped if you are larger than average, also spotless.
Breakfast was superb, The couple who own the hotel and the small group of staff had no end of energy and enthusiasm, a quality which we found lacking in larger establishments in the area. the hotel also houses a Mexican style restaurant which I was apprehensive about initially but it was also spotlessly clean, food was excellent, (owners wife ran the kitchen), and did a good trade with the locals which is always a good sign.
The best place we have stayed in a long time.
