Owner description: HR GIGER IS ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS SWISS ARTISTS. He was awarded an « Oscar » in 1978 in Hollywood for the film « Alien ». He is the designer of Alien and different other biomechanical creatures. The artist was born in Coire in 1940. His dream became truth when he bought St-Germain’s castle in Gruyeres, in this traditional and middle-aged town. Giger has given to Gruyeres a different dimension, a wonderful attraction: two worlds completely opposed. One traditional and the other fantastic, unrealistic, on the whole: another planet. The visitor penetrates in the biomechanical, surrealistic and mind-blowing place. The museum was open since 1998. Most of its twenty rooms are reserved for Giger’s work: paintings, sculptures and furniture. His private collection is shown on the third floor artist such as Coleman, Dado, E. Fuchs, Schwarz, Steve Leuba, etc. The gallery on the 2d floor shows the temporary exhibitions of different invited artists during the year. The museum offers several possibilities to organize events such as parties, weddings, private banquets, etc. A bar completely designed by Giger built on the left hand side of the museum is the last living master piece of the artist where the atmosphere and the sensation are incomparable.

I have to be honest: I went there only because of my partner, and I watched the movie (Alien) 2 days before going to the Museum. However, despite all, I really enjoyed the visit Giger has a peculiar artistic style and the museum is well organized.

This is a must for Giger’s fans and/or folks interested in biomechanical-horror-artwork. Getting there is not straightforward- Gruyeres is a bit out of way - but the drive is nice and the museum is in an area full of nice restaurants where you can try typical Swiss food. The museum has very short working hours, please check it before driving there, and they don’t work on Mondays. The museum itself is fairly big and interesting, be prepared to spend about 1h there. The shop is very poor and there is nothing much available. No pictures are allowed. Most of Giger’s stuff are there and it is a really interesting place, with a good atmosphere. The Giger bar is right next door.

If you are fan of alien this is the place for you. All the decoration is based on this movie and once you go inside all the look and feel is that way.
Nice experience.

I did a special trip for my La Carmina blog readers from London to Gruyeres, just to see the HR Giger bar as I'm a long time fan of his surrealist, bio-mechanical alien works. The museum is housed in a 17th century Chateau de Germain, and it's the perfect setting for his dark, dystopian works. As Alien director Ridley Scott said: “At its essence, Giger’s art digs down into our psyches and touches our very deepest primal instincts and fears. His art stands in a category of its own.” The Giger museum had his rare early works, as well as an adult only erotic section, and originals of his Satanic and occult art. A marvel to see in person, and well worth the trup!

It was a last minute plan to visit this place but i am sure this is the most amazing place in my whole Switzerland trip. I know H.R. Giger only from the Alien movies. It is a bit scary but a must go. Cameras are not allowed so i have no photographs. the painting are so in-depth. the main attraction in the museum which i like the most was the dinning table. A huge table and scary skeleton chairs. I am unable to describe it in words but a MUST VISIT on your trip to switzerland.
