What else can you do in East Lothian on a rainy day? Go and visit Glenkinchie Distillery. The visitor centre is really interesting and I’m so glad that they rescued the model of a distillery. The tour guide John was very interesting and happy to take and answer questions. Excellent choice of whiskies to taste at the end of the tour. Highly recommended and well worth making the time to see a real working distillery if you’re in Edinburgh for a couple of days.

We were made to feel welcome, as friends rather than customers, the moment we walked through the door. There was no hard sell at all, but we chose to take a tour, rather than just look at the exhibition, and ended up in a group of nine. The guide was fantastic; she wasn't reading from a script, but tailored her talk to match the multi-ethnic makeup of the group. She was extremely knowledgeable on both current and historical topics, and fielded all questions with aplomb. Although Glenkinchie is marketed purely as a single malt, being part of Diageo meant that blended whiskies were also explained, but not sampled. From the four single malt samples tasted I learned a lot about the difference, and the addition of a little water.

Great guide. Held the interest of two adults and two children. Well worth a visit. Juice for the kids at the end of the tour too.

Having been on several distillery tours I really just wanted to visit the distillery shop. But finding I had spare time and the next tour was starting only a few minutes later, I decided to do the tour. I was very pleased I did.

Our tour guide was Tina and she was very well informed about the distillery and provided great information. A thoroughly enjoyable 40-50 minutes concluded with a couple of drams at the end. For those of you unfortunate enough to have driven to the distillery these drams can be saved for later and the distillery does provide buses from Edinburgh (see their website).

I would recommend allowing some time to visit the exhibition before the tour which includes a wonderful model distillery demonstrating each process.

Worth spending a couple of hours in beautiful countryside, an idyllic setting and learning more about one of the few surviving lowland distilleries. Even those who have little interest in whisky but like great countryside and local history will gain something.
