“Best views ever!”
Review of Ballaghbeama Gap

Reviewed January 16, 2018 via mobile

One of the best drives I’ve ever been on, the views are amazing and well worth the winding road. Watch out for sheep and mountain goats!! A must do if in the area.

Last year, we did the typical Ring of Kerry route that most people take. While it was great, we decided that next time we would do the ring via the road less traveled. So, during this most recent trip we took the Ballaghisheen Pass to the Ballaghbeama Gap. So glad we did. In a word, incredible. Don’t get me wrong: the normal route on the ROK is just fine (that is, if you don’t mind the crowds), but, if you want to avoid the throngs of motor coaches and tourists, and see some of the best scenery in Ireland, I can highly recommend going this route.

As far as the actual road itself, yes, you have to be on your game, driving-wise. That said, it’s really just a question of paying attention and working with other drivers you might encounter. There are several curves that result in blind spots, but, unless you’re trying to barrel through like Speed Racer, you should be fine. There are plenty of pull offs, allowing you to get out and take photos, and there are even a few places where you can walk into the hills and valleys.

So, if you’re looking for something off the beaten path, and you’d like to experience something that most people visiting the ROK don’t get to see (more than likely because they don’t know about it), take the Ballaghbeama Gap.

You’ll be glad you did.

Google suggested this route to be the shortest to Tralee. Since, it was getting dark and we wanted to reach our B&B, we decided to drive through this mountain pass unaware of the challenging narrow winding road. Although the views were amazing but it is not recommended to drive through this road late in the day since. The road is extremely narrow with no possibility for two cars to pass, luckily we did not get any car coming from the other direction. If you decide to take this scenic route then make sure that you have full fuel tank and a small car and couple of courageous lads to could help in case of a breakdown.

A challenging drive (we were fortunate not to encounter someone coming in the opposite direction), but the trade off is spectacular mountain scenery.

We come back here time & time again when we visit Ireland. Breathtaking views (when not raining). Not for the faint-hearted!
