“The warmest welcome in the area”
Reviewed 26 May 2012

There is always a warm welcome at the Cottage Inn from the new owners. This goes for the staff as well. The food is excellent and reasonably priced, a combination we needed in this area. For the summer there is an excellent beer garden where food is served.

I visited for a meal on the strength of reports of new owners, but disappointingly the food was mediocre at best and the beer at the time poor. The atmosphere is strange and not entirely comfortable for "outsiders" wanting a quiet meal, but it may suite many people. I may call again at some point in the future to see if things have improved, but I will not rush back.

Prior to Autumn 2011 the Cottage Inn was a place to avoid. We suffered the surly lack of interest and the grey dishwater soup once too often. Being local we knew where not to go.
We were delighted when it changed hands and discovered the new friendly, civil, generous, warm owners had taken over. We haven't stayed there (being local) but the ambience, good service and good inexpensive food is always a pleasure to enjoy.
Before there'd be only a car or 2 in the carpark at any time - now there's a healthy amount any day of the week - a sure sign that something is worth having.

We only had Sunday lunch here yesterday but please avoid the place until the new owners have appointed a chef that can cook. It's sad to have to write a negative report on such a public forum but this is how food was prepared in Wales in the '50s. Glutinous soup; unidentifiable grey meat which was suppose to be beef or pork; deserts were tasty but enormous. People should not go into the hospitality industry without any research or training, they're ruining tourism to such a beautiful part of Wales.

We recently stayed for a long weekend whilst visiting family in the area. We were hesitiant to stay here based on recent reviews, but were informed that the place is under new mangement since October 2011 and has been transformed! We received a very warm welcome upon arrival from staff who couldn't have been more helpful (B&B reception was at the bar of the pub) and found the rooms were comfortable, clean and well-maintained with tea and coffee making facilites. The pub itself was welcoming, had a great atmosphere and a "local" feeling. We had an evening meal and traditional Sunday Lunch here which were both of a high standard and delicious for a very reasonable price. Also, The Cottage Inn is in a very convenient location on the main road just outside Llandeilo so was easy to find.

On arrival to the cottage inn we were greeted by no one, tried looking for the entrance, no reception so waited by the bar for 5 mins before a lovely girl welcomed us, showed us to our room and said dinner is served between 6.30 and 8.30pm.
Room was fairly clean, apart from cushion on the bed which smelt like pee!!
Bathroom lights weren't working apart from the mirror light and nowhere to hang our clothes not even a coat hanger behind the door.
No hairdryer!!!
After looking at the high priced menu we decided to eat at the Plough, Rhosmaen (as I know the area and know they are very reasonable) and had a fantastic meal.
We arrived back at the hotel at 9.30pm with all the lights off and no one there, so no drinks available.
As we got ready for bed we could hear the owners toddler crying for a while, so much for a relaxed evening.
Next morning there was NO HOT WATER (as previously mentioned by a previous reviewer, which obviously has not been resolved) after running the taps for 10 minutes!!
Went for breakfast which we were then told chef on holidays so we couldn't have cooked breakfast, so toast and jam it was, not a bad breakfast but disappointed and didn't like the fact the owner and her toddler were sitting in their pj's at the other end of the room watching t.v whilst we were having our breakfast.
We did complain about the lack of hot water but was told there was and she wouldn't listen and ignored our complaint.
Very lazy owners not making an effort for they're guests.

Reviewed 20 January 2011

My wife and I visited the Cottage Inn during January 2011, staying in room 2. We were well greeted at the bar and shown to our room accordingly. A good start.

Unfortunately it did go down hill after that. We decided to have an early night, although it didn't matter as the room is directly above the bar and there wasn't any way we could sleep initially. Thankfully the bar doesn't open too late.

I was woken in the morning by a shower in a room either next to us or above, which was so clearly heard that the splashing water was obvious. We decided to get up and shower, except that there was NO HOT WATER! We read the welcome booklet which stated that there would be a red switch in the bathroom which needed to be turned on for the hot water to work properly. The note did say not every room had one, so as we looked on every wall, inside the bathroom and out without success, we assumed we'd be OK but despite running for 15 mins, it remained stone cold.

Unwashed we went to breakfast in the bar area to find barely a light on and no milk for cereal, nor anything other than two containers of cereal. Eventually someone appeared from the kitchen and eventually the cooked breakfast appeared, which wasn't bad at all.

I was very disappointed as the reviews on this site were very good. However, it's not somewhere that I'd want to return to.
