“Take time to visit this marvel”

Reviewed 23 June 2012

Follow directions provided by earlier reviewer. When you see the ruins of Castlestrange you know you are there; park at the gate and walk up to it. There is a picnic table beside it perfect location for one. I am glad it is available for tourists and visitors to see, for free, and not moved to a museum. Truly wondrous, what is it? why is it there? Seems to be on route for mapped walks as lots of markers for routes nearby. Thanks to the owner of the property for facilitating visitors, if there was a donation box I would have made one.

Finding the stone can be a bit daunting, but if you take R362 northwest from Athleague and turn right on the first L road as you leave town, cross a stone bridge, and you will see a very sharp turn to the right. Do not turn but take the private drive directly in front of you. Please drive slowly and in about 100 yards, you will see the stone on your right.
Castlestrange is an example of Celtic style carving known as La Tene which dates from 250BC. It sits on the edge of a farmer's field on private land. The owner has been very accommodating in fencing the stone to keep it from his livestock. The stone has open access next to his drive and a picnic table has been placed there for those who would like to snack as they gaze at the stone's beauty- very peaceful and serene.
Unfortunately, my photos taken on a sunny day do not do it justice.
