Oh God, where do I start? Exterior is tired and shabby, 2 main doors without signs so went in the wrong one. When we got to reception the hotel is filled with fab old time furniture and it is well laid out and stunning but again very tired. A lick of paint and few fresh flowers. The room had a huge four poster but it had seen better days with a big piece of the head board missing. The room had two kettle bases one kettle, two saucers and spoons but only one cup. The bathroom had seen better days. Looked lovely at first glance but again tired, stained grout, stains around the taps, the taps on the bath were loose and grotty looking. The menu in the nice bar looked brilliant but again another disaster. We got steak and duck, my husband left over 1/2 steak on plate, it being cold was one of its problems. When I asked the waitress about the duck she said it was very crispy, which I love, it came out rubbery with congealed fat under the skin, this in turn seeped down through the noodles and (frozen??) stir fry veg, making the whole thing un-edible. At breakfast the following morning the waitress who came around asked us what did we want, I asked her what was on the menu and she said whatever we wanted. I was temped to ask her for smoked salmon and cavier. The breakfast was fine. Everything fried.
Overall this hotel is tired and in big need of a boot up the backside to bring it into the 21st century. I hope it gets it because it has a wonderful charm trying to get out and if it does and re-invents itself it would be a cracker of a goldmine of a hotel.
The staff are the only reason I didn't give it one.
