My wife and I stayed in the old school house during the Easter holidays. We were looking to escape from the busy city scene in a relaxing quiet environment, and we certainly got that and more.
The views over Lough Allen are amazing and the sense of peace and tranquillity makes this location a wonderful retreat.
The Schoolhouse is beautifully decorated with all the modern and high tech features. The Wi-Fi and tv systems with surround sound throughout the house were excellent. The mezzanine area was impressive and a great space to relax and read. The log burning stoves heated the entire house while providing plenty of hot water. The hot tub, which was already heated and ready for us at our arrival, was a great bonus.
There is a lovely scenic drive from Dromahair to Parkes Castle, along the shores of Lough Gill which is worth experiencing. It's a short drive to other quaint villages.
We would recommend a stay in the old school house for those looking to get away from the distractions of everyday life.
Me and my girlfriend stayed at the old school house for 2 nights after our friends wedding in Dublin. When booking this break we were specifically looking for a place to escape and wind-down with zero distractions. This retreat perfectly met our needs and more!
To start it is deep in the countryside hills over looking Loch Allen, which provided a wonderful view and sense of really being disconnected from the busy modern day life.
The cottage itself is fitted out with plenty of features to enjoy it, whatever your reasons for staying. From the integrated sound system connected to every room including by the hot tub, to the high speed internet connection (We had no trouble being able to stream content onto the main living room TV), to the fully kitted out kitchen. There's even a telescope if star gazing is your thing!
On our arrival we were met by Adam who was very good at showing us around and made sure everything was in place to ensure our stay as comfortable and pleasant as possible. Mainly showing us where the wood for the log burners was, which keys did what and most importantly how to work the hot tub. The finish quality and amenities to the house were second to none. Although it was a little chilly first thing in the morning as the heating is controlled by the log burners, but once you got a few logs going it took no time to heat the place and was easy to maintain a cosy temperature inside all day.
The only minor thing was that finding the place was a bit tricky, but I would say that is more of a bonus once you are there, as you know you have found a small corner of Ireland that hasn't been seen or experienced by many which makes the stay all the more special.
All in all we were delighted with our stay and found it the perfect way to end and wind down our trip to Ireland.
