“A mixture of positives and negatives”

Positives: The Byre was clean and well presented. The suitability for accommodating dogs was excellent and as described.
Negatives: The lane leading to the property from the main road was slightly over 1km in length and in a very bad state. We drove it at approximately 5 mph to minimise damage to our car. There were few passing places and meeting another vehicle could necessitate reversing a considerable distance. We live in rural area and are used to narrow lanes and passing places, but the condition of the access to the Byre was unacceptable to us.
We encountered problems with the heating system on arrival, it was a cold evening in October and the heating did not kick in until 8.30pm in the evening and again not until 7.30am the following morning. Wendy's mother who checked us in was unable to help and the situation was not resolved until Stephen came over to the cottage at 8.30am the following morning.
We accept that a preference for a hard or soft bed varies with individuals but we found the bed in the Byre uncomfortable and did not sleep well.
Finally Wendy made no attempt to give us a warm Welsh welcome during our stay, although we caught glimpse of her on several occasions. Our only other contact was with Stephen when he came over on the 4th morning to check if all was well.

Management Response

Firstly we would like to thank June for taking the time to write a review and for her positive comments. There are however a few discrepancies, so we feel it’s only right we respond:

We were a little surprised by the remarks on the track as we carefully and clearly state in our listing that The Byre is 1Km from the road, surrounded by farmland and accessed via a track, not a lane. As guests who say they live in a rural area, we would assume they understand the importance of exercising caution when driving down such a track, particularly as the presence of sheep is not unusual.

Wendy spoke to June’s husband on the evening they arrived and tried to explain about the heating; there was no need to alter the boiler settings as we leave the heating permanently on for our guests’ convenience, rather it is controlled by thermostats on the radiators. When we checked the heating after June's departure we found that the thermostatic valves on the radiators were all set to off or very low, so can only presume this is the reason they found it to be cold.

Contact with guests is a difficult issue; we have found that most people staying in self catering accommodation prefer to be left alone, so following the initial greeting, we leave our guests to relax and enjoy their holiday in peace (but are always on hand should they need anything). Stephen usually greets our guests on their arrival but in this case he was delayed and didn’t arrive home until 11:30pm that evening. Jean, Wendy’s mother, greeted June and her husband on their arrival and explained the situation, making it clear that Wendy (and Stephen the following morning) would be available, should they need anything during their stay. Stephen also went over at the earliest opportunity and made two further contacts during the week. During one of these occasions June’s husband had mentioned all the positive comments in the visitors’ book relating to the comfortable bed, and suggested they found it uncomfortable (and presumably difficult to sleep) due to a back condition.

Finally, we always provide a welcome tray of Welsh produce, in this case home-made Bara Brith, Welsh cheese and milk, bottles of Pembrokeshire water and home-made dog biscuits.

What a lovely cottage, the surroundings are stunning. You really feel like you are right in the countryside, which is exactly what we wanted, away from all the hustle and bustle of life. The owners made us, and our dog, very welcome providing home made cake for us and home made dog biscuits for Bodie. We couldn't fault the cottage, it was comfy and had everything we needed.

We had a wonderful stay there last week with our dog Charlie.

The cottage itself is lovely and well maintained with everything you could need for a week away.

On arrival Charlie was given some lovely home-made biscuits, and we were delighted with the Welsh cake, cheese, crackers, chocolate and wine.

On our second evening we were attending a wedding, and the owners were so kind to look after Charlie while we were out and took him to their own house to be with them and their lovely dogs - such a nice thing to do.

We had a great week and would recommend staying here for a relaxing and peaceful break from the "real" world.

We had a perfect week in this lovely little cottage surrounded by a beautiful countryside. The owners are very kind and helpful and we had a lot of fun playing with the cute dogs. Many points of interest and everything you need are nearby.

“Fabulous cottage!”

Such a beautiful cottage set on alot of land and very clean streams. We spent 3 nights at the cottage with our two dogs. On arrival we where welcomed with cake and some home made dog biscuits and a little towel was left to dry our dogs of with.
If you are looking for a dog friendly break away this is the place to go, we did not use our dog leads when on the property and we had fun using the agility equipment provided and had lots of walks within the land around the cottage.
I am hoping to come to the cottage again next year as it is just beautiful.

“Peaceful, Relaxing but with lots to do Close By”
Reviewed March 31, 2016 for a stay in March 2016

We had a lovely stay in the Byre and would recommend it to anyone looking for a bit of peace and quiet. The cottage had everything we needed for the 3 nights we stayed; it was well equipped, clean, warm and cosy. I have not slept so well in a long time.... not sure if it was the exceptionally comfy pillows, the darkness, the quiet or all three!!!

There is a long bumpy dirt track you have to drive down to reach the cottage which would benefit from a bit of maintenance but don't let this put you off as it was worth the drive once you arrive. You pass a couple of houses on the way but the cottage is really quite isolated with only 2 more buildings in the same court yard where the owners live.
The main reason for booking this was for the isolated location and dark skies as my husband is interested in astronomy. We usually would try and find a cottage away from any houses and was a little worried about this one being so close to the owners but it was nice knowing they were close by if needed especially as once we had settled in they didn't bother us again at all until we left.

On arrival we were greeted by Stephen who was really friendly and helpful. Like my husband he was also interested in astronomy and was happy to offer advice on best viewing places etc.
Stephen and Wendy were aware of my husbands interest in astronomy before we confirmed our booking and I am not sure if this was a coincidence or not but they had left a couple of astronomy mags for him to look at .... what a lovely thoughtful touch. Once settled in we began to notice lots of other little personal touches......there were bottles of water next to the bed, fresh flowers and a welcome tray with home made jams, cake etc.

We were really lucky as the weather had forecast rain for the whole stay, with hurricane Katie in the middle! But 2 of the 3 nights were dry and clear (although cold) and despite the 2 building next to the cottage it was still very dark (the adjoining cottage could have done with a curtain up at the door to block out the TV and light.... but this wasn't a major problem) and we were able to see plenty of stars! Much better than we get at home.

By day there's also plenty to do especially if you like driving / walking. We didn't go out in the evening being quite far away from anywhere but this suited us and we were happy to have some nice meals in then settle down with a bottle of wine and a good film..... and a bit of star gazing in between!

I am sure we will go back.
