“Thoroughly relaxing holiday (even with teenagers)”
Reviewed July 3, 2018 for a stay in June 2018

We stayed in the Cornflowers Holiday Home for 2 weeks at the end of June - 2 adults, 3 teenagers (17, 15, 13) and a 7 year old. It's not easy to convince older teenagers to leave their friends and join their parents on holiday but after a lot of searching we hoped this property would be suitable and thankfully we were right!! There is an excellent games room inside the cottage (traditional board games but also a good selection of family friendly games PS4 / Wii games too, the older teenagers had forgotten how good Mario Kart was!) and there is wifi - ideally we would like to escape the dreaded screens but not realistic with teenagers! So we waved the white flag and thankfully the lure of the fabulous pool was strong enough so we didn't feel they were plugged in too much.
The garden is fantastic, lovely shaded dining area and bbq, plenty of shade from mature trees but plenty of sun too. We especially liked that there was some shade around the pool (it was very hot during our stay). Pool had good selection of inflatables, Annette came to check the pool halfway through the stay - it was the highlight of the property for us. The garden is not big enough for games of football, no swings etc but that wasn't what we were looking for and having stayed in properties with large grounds we have found that the children always gravitate to the pool anyway.
Inside the house felt very spacious, downstairs in particular remained nice and cool during the day. Good sized bedrooms, plenty of room for our family. Only quibble - it has 2 WCs, separate from the bathrooms and they are tiny and could be a problem for someone who needs extra space for mobility / health reasons. But luckily we didn't spend much of the holiday on the toilet!
We have stayed in other properties where the owner lives on site and this has often been a problem with well-meaning but over-bearing owners "popping in" regularly and sharing a pool or garden but wanting to share our evening with us too (not that we are unsociable, we just don't need entertaining while on holiday!!). But at this property we felt completely relaxed and at home as the owner is not on site. The property manager Annette was only a few minutes drive away if we needed her - but as we didn't, we could be totally at ease in the garden and property. It is situated at the end of a quiet cul de sac, there are neighbours but the garden is completely private and not overlooked at all. It would have been nice to have a boulangerie or shop within walking distance but it was only 5 minutes drive. We would bring bikes if we were in the area again - would be great if some were available at the property.
Lucon is a very well equipped town, good supermarkets and selection of places to eat and is close by.
La Rochelle is an hour away, as is Puy du Fou (definitely worth a visit and if you want to see the night-time Cinescene you must book well in advance, we were too late this time but have visited before). O'Gliss Waterpark is close by, expensive but definitely recommended if you like waterparks (but in high season you would need to arrive very early to avoid queues and grab a sun-bed!)
Vendee coastline and beaches are amazing - but it was so hot and we were so happy relaxing by the pool that we didn't make many beach trips.
Would also recommend booking the Cornflowers direct, rather that via one of the websites - we saved some money by doing this.
Overall one of the most relaxing holidays we have had as a family, would highly recommend the property and the area.

“Comfortable house with a great pool in a beautiful location”
Reviewed June 16, 2014 for a stay in May 2014

The service we received from the reservations manager was first rate throughout - she was very flexible in accommodating our travel plans, and was helpful when called upon.

The house is generously sized, well-equipped and comfortably furnished, with loads of room to park the car and a decent garden for the kids to run round in. We particularly liked the bananas and cherries growing in the garden! The pool was great, with loads of toys to use, although at the end of May it wasn't particularly warm.

We took all our bikes and cycled extensively around the area - the country roads are very quiet and we found some absolutely gorgeous road cycling routes, although the advertised cycle paths were pretty rough and best suited to offroad bikes.

The boulangerie in nearby Beugne st Abbe was a decent walk away, or a short car journey, and had much to recommend it. For food shopping, the hyper u in Lucon was close, cheap and easy. We weren't that impressed with the rest of Lucon - we struggled to find a nice place to eat in the middle of the week, and tended to steer clear.

We spent several days in la Tranche sur mer (20 mins drive), where we found great windsurfing, beaches , cafes and restaurants, and also the beach at La Terriere was brilliant for body boarding. We all had a great time at the Indian Forest - the Accrobranche is not for the faint hearted, but our kids (aged 9,10 and 12) absolutely loved it.

Overall, we had an excellent week. Niggles with the house included a couple of power cuts, and it feeling chilly in the evenings so that we needed to light the woodburner. This is an area we would definitely go back to, and this house represented good value for money.

We are two families of four adults and four teenagers from Cornwall. Gite was in a rural location. There was a good level of equipment however some items in the kitchen needed to be re-cleaned. We made good use of the BBQ area and pool. Use of vehicle is essential from this location as the nearest town is 15 minutes drive. There were lovely beaches in the area within 30 minutes drive. Recommend a visit to Ile de Re, well worth the €16 one way toll. Also recommend La Terriere beach. Overall the accommodation was great for two families, however it would suit families with younger children due to the bed sizes.

“Charming and well equipped.”
Reviewed September 13, 2012 for a stay in August 2012

We had a lovely holiday in this beautiful and well equipped gite. The set up was great for two families, with the bedrooms being split into two and two. The shady garden had plenty of furniture and was wonderful in the very hot weather, although it would be great if the pool was fenced off. The reservations manager was lovely and very quick to help when necessary. The one negative to be aware of is that the building is very old and consequently was damp and slightly musty smelling. This however in no way impinged on our enjoyment.
