Having lived in the area in the past I always return to the abbey and it has some happy memories. We took our children here and picnicked amongst the ruins and played hide and seek. I have sat and meditated with the bubbling River Swale and the birds providing the perfect background sounds. A local, many years ago told of the legend that when the walls of the abbey fall it will herald the end of the world. There is a perfect walk to Richmond where you can retrace the steps of the little drummer boy. Next to the abbey is St Agatha's church which is well worth a visit and if you walk past the church up the road to the corner of the fenced field on the left you will find the echo stone. Stand on it and shout to the hills and you will get the echo back. Children of all ages love this and every visit i stand on the stone and shout!

Walked to the abbey from Richmond on a lovely March day. We were able to firstly go inside the church which is beautiful. There are more ruins of the abbey than I expected, it’s amazing the amount that has survived. The info boards just gave as much information as needed too how fantastic the building would have been. Very enjoyable, we walked back on the opposite side of the river from the srtart (at the train station that was) and found the stone commemorating the Drummer Boy.

The abbey is a ruin but is free to visit and the setting by the lovely St. Agatha's church with the river nearby is very pleasant. We didn't go in as it had been raining heavily so was muddy but you can get good photos from the path. It's much bigger than we thought too. Turner painted this abbey and a print of his painting is on the explanation board by the entrance.

We visited here on a walk from our lodge to Richmond and stopped for a wander round the site. It’s a nice for a little visit it doesn’t take too long to walk all the way round the site.

The ruins are all very interesting and give an idea of the scale the abbey would have been in its hey day.
