We did the 3.5 hr trip to Russian border on ATVs.
The machines were in good condition and we got a good briefing. Much of the driving was doing 60kph on regular roads with only a short off road forest section.
The steering on the quad required effort and you need fairly good arm strength.
The old and new border posts were surprisingly interesting and we got a good talk about Norwegian -Russian relations.
We drove through some pretty countryside and a photo stop would have been nice.
The coffee stop was standing up by a rather tatty souvenir stand drinking black coffee or tea out of plastic cups. Although the Norwegians always drink coffee black, at the cost of the excursion I expected milk or creamer to be available.

We booked the tour at short notice in the summer (7C !). They picked us up at the Thon hotel on time in a very comfortable small bus. Our guide was Geir - very entertaining and knowledgeable. Only 5 mins later we were at the dock where we Sergei - cook and general man about the place. They kit you out in survival suits which are very welcome - even in summer ! We climbed into our river boat and headed off a few hundred meters to pull up the crab pot. Geir and Sergei sift through the King crabs and choose the best 6 for our group of 8. They toss back those that aren't needed for the next group - i'm not sure if they are caught there or placed there though. They pass around a suitable crab for everyone to hold and take photos - well worth doing - these are amazing creatures.

We then journey up the river a few kms with a few comments along the way from Geir to their border camp. The border is not that interesting but they have a nice camp with old photos and Geir extracts a lot from a few good stories.

The real fun then starts after Sergei briefly boils the crabs so their perfect for eating. A bit of beer or wine to accompany and you get stuck in. Geir gives very good eating instructions - these are the easiest and tastiest crabs i have ever had - excellent ! More than enough to satisfy the most ravenous.

This was not a cheap trip and there isn't that much to see but the crabs make it worth it.

This safari is by itself a reason to visit Kirkenes! The boats are fun, the guides are excellent and the crab feed is beyond description. If you like king crab it is the best it can be. The frozen crab you normally get is nowhere close to this fresh crab. The fact you get a history lesson about Norway/Russia is an added bonus.

We took two of the Barents Safari excursions in two consecutive days in June, and both were fabulous. The first day we went on the summertime King Crab Safari, with Hans as our guide on the Boris Gleb riverboat. First we went to pull up crab pots teeming with king crabs, then to see the natural and historical sights of the upper Pasvik River, including wildlife, and then stopping at their camp right on the Russian border to feast on unlimited quantities of the freshly caught crab. Throughout Hans shared a wealth of information and we had a wonderful time.

The second day we went with Ulf on ATVs to visit the Pasvik Valley. My wife and were lucky to have the tour all to ourselves, with the two of us on one ATV and Ulf on the other. Tooling around on-road and off was lots of fun, but the best thing was the chance see this beautiful narrow tongue of Norway, mainly virgin forest, bordered to the east by Finnland and to the west by Russia. Ulf was very knowledgeable and a pleasure to spend time with.

On both trips we were impressed by the the friendliness of the guides and their leisurely pace (they seemed to have plenty of time for us, never rushing us). They provided all the equipment that was needed (coveralls and life-preservers for the boat, and coverall and helmets for the ATV) and everything was of top quality and in excellent condition. Safety was clearly a priority, but never an annoyance.

Altogether the two trips memorable and a good value.

We went to Kirkenes to spend a night in the Snow Hotel (and do a few of their "adventures" trips) but King Crab Safari with Hans became the highlight of the trip. Excellent guide, fun snowmobile trip and delicious king crabs (and very generous - all you could eat! ;))
Thanks Hans and Sergei - if we are ever back in Kirkenes (and I hope we will be back) - we will do it again (and again ;))
