First of all the owner was far more cooperative then many we have stayed with. He was fluent in English (and other languages) and was always on hand if we needed anything. Thus is unlike a couple of recent experiences earlier this year and last summer when the owners at that time were not that interested.
The apartment in general is spacious and plenty of room for two in a double room with a large twin if you want children to come too. (Some decent pillows would be welcome).
The views from the terrace (and this is a LARGE terrace) are wonderful, overlooking the town across to one of the nearby lakes and to the mountains in the distance. They look like hills but they are in fact 1500>1600 meters.
Ideally placed for visiting nearby towns/cities of Cadiz,Seville,Ronda etc. (Jerez too if you only want a sherry session). Allow time to meander through the town of Arcos. Plenty of bars and restaurants (in 2013 very inexpensive). There is a lot of walking around the town and in the local area but bear in mind the temperature.
When reading the rest of my review, please bear in mind that am recommending this regardless of my next comments.
One minor point is that the garage is NOT suitable for parking even a small car. We had a Hyundai I10 and it was extremely difficult to get it in the garage and out, so we only did it once. Ideal if you have a 2 seater "Smart" car but nothing bigger (except 2 wheels). There is parking nearby at the bottom of a steep hill (think of Polperro) or if not available there is ample parking near a local square/supermarket. I timed the walk back from here (we are fit walkers) and it only took 10 minutes but it was steep and hard going with the shopping.
This is not suitable for people that are unable to walk up steep inclines and also the apartment itself is on 4 floors (all to yourself) the ground floor only being the entrance and garage. Steepish stairs, but no real problem for the average person but you will need to take this into account if you have young children.
The MAIN issue we had (I would still recommend it) was the kitchen area. It was not equipped for self catering, although there were plates, knives/forks/spoons and a couple of saucepans. We had no bottle opener, no salad/mixing bowls, no cooking knives of any sort nor a bread knife and no chopping/preparation/bread boards. No ladles, or any of the normal kitchen utensils one would expect. We are OK with salads and it was just a little unfortunate that we did not cook any meals. We did buy a couple of bits and left them there so there is now a bottle opener, ice tray, cheese grater and a sieve. We think spending, say, 50 euros would equip the kitchen sufficiently - items are very inexpensive at the local supermarket.
There is an electric kettle and toaster but the main problem is that the hob of the oven is gas and is disconnected so the alternative is a portable 2 ring hob which stands on a low level table. It could be moved on top of the gas hob, but really needs the electric oven/gas hob replaced with all electric and the portable 2 ring hob removed.
There is a little poetic license about the kitchen. Apart from one area at the back which could do with re-shelving, the kitchen consists or modern lime effect floor and wall cupboards - sort of standard kitchen units, not wood, but wood effect. With a bit of DIY to replace the shelves at the back, behind some sliding doors, and the hob, the kitchen is fine. We have stayed in places where the kitchen is much smaller, so although not large, it could be made into something really nice. (We'd also recommend an extra work surface on the wall opposite the sink unit for some extra areas to work on).
Finally, another recommendation is to make more use of the terrace as an eating area. In the UK one can buy inexpensive metal tables and chairs from the likes of B&Q - I would suggest seating for 4 rather than the two plastic chairs and tables.
The owner is a fantastic guy (we were met at the apartment around midnight with no problems) and this would be a wonderful apartment with a few minor tweeks (sorry if it sounds major but it isn't really).
We would recommend this 'as is' to friends and to anyone who can manage the walking up the hills, after all that is why you would pick a place with such amazing views, it is well worth it.
