The approach to Tal Bjar is up a little geranium lined alley to a wooden door and the prettiness and care given to this is borne out by the rest of the villa. A little courtyard links the living area with the bedrooms which all have outside doors (bring a cagoul in case of rain!) and this too is lined with flowers. The living area has all that you could want in practical terms and the pool and surrounding area is well-equipped and beautifully maintained. Two of the bedrooms have lovely views over the pool whilst the other two, at the back of the house, are darker with restricted windows. However I suspect they would be cool in the heat and it's the living area where you spend your time. All the amenities promised were there. We had slightly mixed weather (the Gozitan wind was amazing!) and the villa really came to life and "worked" when the sun came out and the inside and outside became one.
The situation in San Lawrenz is convenient, nowhere in Gozo is far away, and we used the little supermarket in the village as well as the Arkardia store in Victoria (which only took 10-15 minutes to get to) for other shopping. It has Waitrose goods! More seriously, it also had more specialist food, including a large gluten-free section and, important for us, Lacto-free goods including 6 different cheeses - never found this anywhere in the UK!
We are fans of a book called "The Kappillan of Malta" by Nicholas Monserrat, which will give you a strong admiration for the Maltese people, and we were charmed to find that, quite by chance, we had landed in the village where Monserrat lived and wrote the book.
Tatitas restaurant in the village, easy walking distance for the able, is very good, though the Dutch waiter is a little too concerned with impressing rather than serving. The owner was delightful. Food was very good, especially a fish the Gozitans call Denci.
We had someone with chronic illness in our party and not only was Joe very helpful in all the ways one would expect, but I felt he had a real concern for us and would have stepped in to help in any way possible had we needed it. He put a few basics in the house for us, because we arrived late on a Saturday night, and although he lives in Malta, we never felt that he was not available for us.
Highly recommended. Reluctant to specify for whom - outside stone steps to 3 bedrooms have limitations which would have to be judged individually. The one downstairs bedroom is accessible to those with issues with stairs.
