Relaxing, clean and friendly

Review of Pousada Caúca
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jun 13, 2019
Great place to stay. Highly Recommend!! We had previously been staying at a nearby hostel but had to move as it was disgusting. This place could not have been any different. The staff were so friendly, the garden was a lovely place to relax and the wifi was great. The breakfast was lovely too. Great location, easy to get to restaurants, the wharf etc. We only wish we could have stayed longer.

My wife and I spent a weekend there late in Sept'17 and it was a great stay.
First of all, the staff and general attendance were absolutely great.
This inn was not very close to main restaurants and bars in Abraão village, which is good to avoid noises of the night life. In fact, after a 3-5 minutes walk you can get easily there.
The room was huge and cozy. Bed closes carefully clean and all stuff well organized and clean.
Awesome breakfast with several options of cake, breads, fruits and juices. Scrambled eggs done at the time you request.
There was also a zen space, a sort of bed, with some cushions, reserved, low light and and sweet incenses, where guests could medidate after a full day enjoying the attractions of the island.
And the price was fair considering all features.

We stayed 3 nites in August 2017 in an upstairs room. The Pousada is on the back road from the pier, a few blocks down with the beach just beyond at the end of the street. It was easy to reserve on line and the front desk staff were also very welcoming as we came and went each day. The breakfast is really generous with fruits, breads, cheese, cakes of all sorts. Power was down all across Ilha for 2 of the days we were there - but it was no problem since the Pousada must have generator backup and thinks continued to work smoothly (although wifi was out -but who cares when I'm on vacation!) The courtyard was a pleasant respite to hang out after a day at the beach and before our taxi boat home. Price was fair. Definitely recommend!

We took a weekend trip to Ilha Grande and stayed at Cauca. The room was clean and comfortable, the bathroom small but the shower was splendid. The staff very helpful and kind. The breakfast well arrayed. It's only a couple of minutes away from the beach in a quiet area of town. As a plus, we ferried out of Abrao on the 17.30 ferry and after check out they looked after our bags, and upon our return they offered us a shower before our definitive departure. I'd definitely book again with Cauca.

Okay, let's be honest, we checked out quite a few pousadas and made a short list. This place was on our short list. It's not on the beach but we liked the reviews and the location seemed to be okay although it's hard to tell when you're almost 11,000 km away. What finally made the difference was that they had online booking and didn't use those third party online booking services. We could pay our deposit online rather than sending them our credit card information.

So, booking done, we were off to Ilha Grande. We arrived late in the evening after a long journey, which is another story, and the staff were waiting to greet us and show us to our room. We had called ahead to tell them we'd arriving around 9:00 pm. Our room was small but comfortable and clean. It was interesting that all the furniture except the bed and a bench, were attached to the wall and not touching the floor. That probably makes the rooms easy to clean and there was enough space for us to keep our luggage and daypacks off the floor.

We slept well, despite the late night serenade, and awoke to the sound of birds singing. When we opened our door to the morning sun we were treated to a view of a nice garden and some really interesting flowers and trees. The breakfast room was only a few steps away as was a meditation shelter and a couple of hammocks. We like birdwatching and spent some time trying to identify several of the local birds.

Breakfast was simple but tasty and filling enough to start our day of exploring.

Let me tell you about the nightly serenade. There are lots of dogs on the island, many don't have collars and even the ones with collars roam freely, or so it seems. We did see a few dogs on the end of a leash. Well, at night they sing to each other. Some nearby and some far away. Certainly we weren't the only visitors in the only pousada to hear the nightly singing. The dogs on the island are very friendly and move on if you look at them and say "no, I'm not going to share my lunch with you". The streets are clean and rarely do you see dog poop on the streets. Someone cleans it up pretty quickly.

All that being said, we really enjoyed our stay at the Pousada Cauca. The room was comfortable and clean, the gardens were pleasant, the staff were friendly and helpful, the wifi worked well and it's only about a three minute walk to the shopping and restaurant area. I'd definitely stay again.

The stay in Pousada Cauca was a bit disappointing, for the price we payed in Ilha Grande we had the expectation for our stay to be as good as it was in Rio. The room was ok, but nothing to the standards you normally expect in a holiday destination.
Service from the staff especially at the reception wasn't great having a bit of an attitude. The cleaning team was really nice and the room was kept tidy and cleaned.
Breakfast was quite poor and with very few (or none) enjoyable healthy options.
